Exporting audio from a video

Joe-Berg wrote on 6/3/2023, 6:55 AM

Hi,

I know how to export the audio of a video but I can't export it at the same bit depth as is shown in the audio's 'Properties'.which shows it at 32 bits. However, when I export it the resulting audio is at 16 bits and I haven't found any way to change this.
My collaborator in this project want's the audio to be at 32 bits for processing/enhancing it in ProTools. I'm not convinced this is necessary but he insists on it...

Any help will be much appreciated,

Thanks, Joe.

Hi Joe.

I'm afraid that option is only available in the Vegas Pro range of Magix video editors.

Yet another tier of separation of capabilities between the programs.

You could see if the ME3 audio editor allows the export of individual files at those bit depths but my copy is currently not working for me to test it for you.

Thanks, Ray,

Yeah, I guess you get what you pay for, but the export seems such a basic function that one might expect more bit depth options to be available in MSS.

I wonder what limitations I might discover next....😜

Your reply is appreciated,

Joe.

Hi Joe.

That would be true if Magix sale offers weren't like DFS 🤣.

Sometimes the Vegas programs are being sold or available for cross-grading for less than the VPX 14 price.

I don't remember MMS / MEP or VPX ever being able to select a higher bit depth for export in audio formats but I may be wrong as I started using MEP in 2018 and know nothing of programs before that. It could be because some VST 32 bit plugins don't work at higher bit depths.

The audio which I exported is the audio track of my video and showed inside MMS as being 32 bit, after export it was at 16 bit in WaveLab.
So, that means MMS can't export a 32 bit audio file but can import one, or convert a lower bit depth to 32 bits when importing, then back to 16 bit when exporting?

And I thought writing, recording and performing music was difficult? Pfffftt. 😛

Hi Joe.

It's an oddity for sure as some audio in the video file exports actually have a 24 bit depth as part of their codec.

Although Magix firmly avoid directly answering the question of which program is more 'Pro' as they feel that "All of our programs are capable of giving pro results" being their stock answer, there is definitely a tier system in place of capabilities that separates each one. Otherwise what would be the point of offering so many versions of a video or audio editor other than cater for different levels of need? Why pay for more than you use?

There has to be cut off points between capabilities of each program and it is up to the developers as to which capability gets left out or included. Those choices are going to effect some users while not others. The saying, 'You can't please all the people all of the time' seems appropriate in this instance.

Magix I think have always wanted to be a big player in the Pro division where the real spenders are or they would not have purchased Vegas. They certainly did not transpose the technology over to the Magix editors but developed them separately with separate development teams. I could see their point. You also want starters to video editing to come in at a reasonably easy to learn starting point ant their needs are basic. Then they can upgrade as they need to, if they need to, as each step up the ladder gets more complex.

The problem for Magix was I don't think they had the budget to develop Vegas at the same rate as Adobe did with their editing range of products. A German finance company has effectively taken over Magix and has appointed their own CEO and a new development manager to oversee the company so maybe we will start to see major changes.

I would love to know if Magix offers corporate customers a similar paid for 24/7 help desk similar to Adobes. Who knows?

Ray.
