Export 3D video stopped working. Out video no video just sound

AgingTechNerd wrote on 3/11/2022, 9:58 AM

So I was having great results using MEP to take a stereo pair of mp4 videos (side by side GoPros) and uploading to YouTube to view anaglyph or on my Oculus Quest 2 VR head set example:

I let MEP install an update yesterday and now I only get a small video file (10mb instead of 2.4gb) with no video just the sound. I can see the video in the editing preview window fine but the export preview window it's just black.

I'm using MEP 2022 ver 21.0.2.130 (UDP3) UG code 5930 KA1 and following the workflow in this YouTube video:

I was previously successful exporting to .mp4 side by side half width. I just tried exporting to HEVC and it MEP froze at about 80% export.

What am I missing? Is there an option to undo the update?

Hi Still editing 3D files I see 😉.

Does this only happen with an existing or older project or is it happening in a newly created one?

I ask because while it may not be widely known it is accepted within the few permanent 'crew' here that it is no longer wise to install an update until all currently worked on projects are finished with as updates can have unwanted side effects on projects created before an update. There has been a past Magix official statement to that affect in the News section of this website.

If a newly created project is not effected then unfortunately you will have to start the old project over again.

I personally am not overly happy with that situation using my emotional brain, as it makes a mockery of archiving older projects if one wishes to keep up with the latest 'fixes' within a given program release.

My logical brain says it would be illogical to expect an old project to work in what is effectively a new program and if I was opening an old still image raw file I would not be doing it from an old PSD file but by starting anew and not to keep hanging on to old movie project folders but keep the original files to work on at a future date.

Ray.

I took a break from shooting 3D because of the weather. I just happen to shoot new because of a family get together. So i started up MEP after a multi week pause and it offered up the update. So i went for it. All previous projects had been completed and deleted. I just started this new project from scratch last night and kept getting this same no video result. I tried a few things but no joy. I went back and tried to recreate my snow plow video as a new project and same problem. So I’ve not mixed projects across the MEP revision. It’s just like the update broke it. Given that it’s looking more like a program problem vs a workflow issue i decided to submit a support request. Next time I won’t be so quick to update. I’ll see what they come back with but maybe in the mean time I’ll see if the previous install file is still available. I had handed just out Anaglyph glasses out to the family so they could watch it over YouTube.

Hi

. . . . I was previously successful exporting to .mp4 side by side half width. I just tried exporting to HEVC and it MEP froze at about 80% export. . . .

Was the successful MP4 export also h.265/HEVC or h.264/AVC?

Can you export as h.264/AVC without crashing?

Some additional information which may help is your computer specification - see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full - I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Yes. I set my GoPros to use h.254 intentionally to avoid compatibility issues or sync issue due variable frame rates. Importing has not been an issue. I can import, sound sync, align under 3D properties. I can see it in anaglyph in the upper left preview window. It just the export that doesn't work.

ok I filled in the computer details in the support request and now realised I had not posted it here. Sorry about that. My computer is a 15" Intel Mackbook pro mid 2015 model 11,5 fully booted into windows 10 using Bootcamp. The processor is an i7-4980HQ CPU@2.8ghz, 4 cores 8 logical processors, ram 16gb, Storage is 1TB SSD. Video is AMD Radeon R9 M370X. Is this enough detail?

I just found the installer from back in January and just did a reinstall but it looks like the old installer installed the same versions as mine was after the update. Exporting now and no video in the video preview. Would you know how I could access the previous version to 21.0.2.130 (UDP3) UG code 5930 KA1 what ever that was? My first install and purchase was Jan 22 2022.

@AgingTechNerd

Hi

Thanks for the specs.

In the Program settings, Device options tab, try the following combinations for the Import, Processing and Export options

All to Radeon R9 M370X - also ensure that the drivers for this GPU are up to date and try the export again.

All to CPU and try the export again.

Thanks for this. The device option tab has all 3 set to Radeon R9 M370X.

I checked in WIndows device manager for the AMD R9 and the current driver on my system is 7/15/2015 ver 15.00.1060.0.
Apple support has an article ( https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT208908 ). I follow the steps and it lets me download an Installer Utility for a 2021 version of the driver but the utility stops and says Error 173 it can't find any AMD hardware on my system. I tried letting Windows 10 Device Manager find the driver in the AMD directory but just says I have the latest version on the driver. I called Apple Support and they tried a few things then advised me to ask AMD support. So I have a support request in to AMD. So I'll need to go get that figured out and I'll report back here.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

AgingTechNerd wrote on 3/12/2022, 4:34 PM

ok I was able to update the AMD driver to 4/5/2021 ver 27.20.14540.4003.

It now prompts me to disable hardware processing. Still no video on the exported file.

I'm glad the driver is updated but unfortunately I still can no longer export 3D videos for YouTube.

Any other things I should try?

Thanks.

Did you try with all 3 options set to CPU?

I just tried it (why didn't I think of that?). It seems to have solved the problem.

It's still exporting now but the preview is working and the stats show much more video data than audio data. In fact with the driver update things are smoother than before!

Much appreciated! Have a beer on me!

Thanks!
