Encoding Speed Dropoff-MMS 2023

AAProds wrote on 7/5/2023, 9:08 AM

Just noticed my MMS 2023 encoding speed has dropped off. On Ray's test project, I'm now clocking 9 minutes, when my initial test was 5min or so.

On Ray's test, my GPU 3060 never gets above 35%, when I'm sure it was flogging itself at 100% (in the middle of the test) initially.

My RTX driver is 536.40 but I can't roll back as the rollback button is greyed out in Device Manager.

I have checked ReBAR is still on, and the 3060 is in all three HW accel dropdowns.

On a 1920x1440 export at 24kb/sec, the 3060 is similarly going along at only 35%.

My Neat Bench is still around 47fps, as it was initially.

Any ideas or similar behaviour?

Have they slowed me down so I buy the new version?? (Just kidding!).

Example on the 1920x1440 movie (Neat Video applied to all objects):

Encoding at around 25% of movie speed.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al

Browse to the driver search page here, half way down the page you will see Beta drivers and Archive - all previous drivers are there.

If the driver install complains a newer version is installed and will not let you continue, do a full un-install first, before running the older version.

Hi Al

From your screenshot it appears that NVENC and NVDEC is not being used as there is no activity on the 2 bottom graphs - Video Encode and Video Decode - so it is possible that section of the timeline did not contain any video that could be HWAccelerated ie H.264 or H.265. Quite a bit of that test is graphics (which BTW, is why I don't think it is a very good benchmarking test) which is not capable of HWA, so at that point the separate NVENC chip on the Nvidia card is not active

Would help to take another shot where the band is playing and post that.

Thanks gents. As per Peter's observation (I don't really understand the various bits of the GPU readout) I did then notice that the "no hardware encoding" message was shown at the top of the Export dialogue. I did something to the encoding settings that disabled HW encoding. I don't know what, yet. HW encoding is working on other settings. John will be getting his cane ready to give me a rap over the knuckles for fiddling with the export presets...

Thanks all, Gid, that's a good page. Here is my TM with the band playing with the 536.23 driver (same as the 536.40):

I'd swear the 3060 was running at 100% in my original run of Ray's test in this band area.

. . . . John will be getting his cane ready to give me a rap over the knuckles for fiddling with the export presets . . . .

👍😂😂😂

Ray's test project's Intro and Outro sections are very complex and do not encode on the NV GPU or iGPU - I see them being done by the CPU, the in-between parts I see encoding on the GPU with HWA where possible.

HWA is not applied to some effects which are predominantly done by the CPU

It doesn't really matter which version of RTX desktop driver you download and install they are identical drivers. The "selection" process gives Nvidia statistics of who has what card and how often new drivers are downloaded (I had an email conversation with Nvidia to that effect last year but I can't find it now to post)

Not so sure about the Notebook drivers though.

@AAProds

Al, just out of curiosity what version of Intel 770 UHD driver is loaded. I've posted here before that over a few weeks the Intel driver on my system gets reinstalled to an old version for some odd reason and I'm wondering if wours has reloaded; this could have a bearing on why you've slowed down a bit - the computer not you personally 😁
