Effects

nirvanray wrote on 11/17/2012, 4:03 AM

Hello people,
Last night I was watching the film Life in a Day by Ridley Scott.
Well I found two images quite interesting. I have named them Double-Image Effect and Convex Image Effect. And I am inspired to use them. I have attached the video and pictures as well.
As for my skills goes,  for the Double-Image Effect I tried to copy-paste the clip and put that on bottom but sadly that didn’t work.
Secondly I think that Convex Image Effect can be achieved by Effects---Fisheye.
Any help or commets.
Please check the video and pictures for reference.
Regards.

Hi Anirban

The first effect can be achieved like this this - I have used still images and created a triple image effect - however it does work with video - here is the timeline

And here is the result

Note the mirror effect was applied to the mask to switch the left/right black/white sections only - you may need to do this as well if you only create 1 mask.

The mask is a 3840 * 2160 image black-white image with a 100px feather between the two colours - I have put a copy of the mask here.  I make most of my masks double the size of my HD video projects to allow for movement as is needed in this example.

The only problem I have found is that for some images/video this effect does not work well

Dear John,

Thanks a lot for your kind help. Appretiate.

But I am sorry to ask you but how can I acheive Offset 150px left and 75 ones and also where can I get these alpha masks.

Thanks.

Hi Anirban

I have put a copy of the mask here when you open the image in your browser right click it and select Save image as or whatever option you get for saving the image.

Sorry - the offset is the  Effects, Size and Position, Left setting

I make my own masks as much as possible in an image editing program - you can do this in Photo Designer 7 which is installed with MEP

Dear John,

I tried your lesson but somehow that didn’t work. I followed exactly what you instructed me (as per the above picture) but I am unsuccessful in achieving the effect. I have attached the jpeg of what I have done.

Please do let me where is the mistake.
Regards.

Hi Anirban

You need to stack the images and mask directly above each other as shown in my example, and apply the offeset as in my second post.

Hi Anirban,

Did you try stacking the images and masks on top of each other the way John suggested instead of staggered the way it is shown in your screen shot?

I tried this approach and it did work but it produced an annoying line in the video that I could not seem to get rid of, so I went for an alternate approach.  This YouTube video shows 2 approaches I used to create the double image plus 1 attempt at the convex image.

The convex image was most likely shot with either a convex lens or a lens adapter to create the effect.  The approach I tried to do using software gives something similar but definitely not identical.

Let me know if you are interested in any of them and I would be happy to provide more detail on how I created them.
