dvd's not playing on SONY BluRay player

Reggie-Rivera wrote on 10/23/2021, 9:15 PM

The dvd's I burn on Movie Edit Pro Plus 2021 don't play on my stand alone SONY BluRay player - it gives me the dialog box "unsupported mode". However, the dvd's I burned on a previous version of Movie Edit Pro ( Movie Edit Pro 16 HD ) do play on the BluRay player. Are there settings I should change on MEP Plus 2021 or the BluRay player and what are they? I am currenty using Windows 10 Home latest version on an HP laptop with 2.38 GHZ, 12 GB RAM, 1 TB. Thanks, Reggie

Hi

When preparing to burn the disc:

  1. which disc type - DVD, Blu-Ray, AVCHD are you choosing?

  2. Which menu template are you choosing and did you make any changes to it?

  3. Are you changing any of the encoding parameters eg Bitrate, audio settings etc?

  4. What brand and type of disc are you burning to?

1. DVD+R and DVD-R

2. Not choosing any menu template, I deselect Film menu and Chapter menu and burn as is.

3. Not changing any encoding parameters, I notice the Smart Rendering option is greyed out, my previous MEP 16 HD on another computer was not greyed out.

4. Verbatim DVD+R and Memorex DVD-R

Note: The disks play on my old stand alone AMW dvd player circa 2003 but not on my new SONY stand alone BD-R player.

Hi

Thanks for the information.

. . . . The disks play on my old stand alone AMW dvd player circa 2003 but not on my new SONY stand alone BD-R player. . . .

What model is the Sony BD player?

Are the discs that do not play on the new player DVD+R, DVD-R or do both types not play?

It's a SONY BDP-S1700, the disks are DVD+R and DVD-R. Why is the Smart Rendering option greyed out on MEP Plus 2021?

@Reggie-Rivera

Hi

The player is capable of handling DVD on DVD-R and +R discs, however the error message is usually associated with an incorrect setting of the HDMI output/TV input configuration, however as older disc play OK this can be ruled out.

. . . . the disks are DVD+R and DVD-R . . . .

Which type does not play in the BD player?

Smart rendering is only available for very specific conditions:

  • the imported video file format must be the same as the output format
  • the video and audio bitrates must be identical
  • there are only cuts in the project - no effects, transitions
  • images, titles collages etc will not be smart rendered

Even then there is no guarantee that Smart render will work.

Thanks for your help, John. I did "Reset program settings to defaults" in MEP Plus 2021 file menu and now the dvd's created since now play on the SONY BD. I can't believe the solution was right there already and I wasted lots of dvd's this weekend trying to figure it out!

Thanks for the feedback - a somewhat unexpected cause of the issue, however pleased everything is now functioning OK.

I would suggest you get a couple of rewriteable DVD-RW discs and use these for first, and subsequent if necessary, burns, onceeverything is OK then you can just copy the DVD-RW to DVD-R or +R and re-use the DVD-RW on the next project.
