Downloading HD video files from SLR Camera

HI,

I have made several family video compilations using Magix Movie Pro 17 HD.  This is the first time I am using video files from a high resolution Canon T3 rebel SLR camera.  When uploading the files the program said the files were too high of a resoulution and could be edited only if the program was allowed to reduce the resolution.  I agreed and clicked on this for editing purposes...Editing has been difficult as there is a lag in the clips and the audio is glitchy.  Is there a way to fix this and will the files when burned to a final disc be like the original high resolution ones?  Please help!!!!

Hi,

Start by carefully studying my lengthy reply in this thread

and following up any suggestions that seem especially relevant to your case.

Hi,

To add to Terry's comments and suggestions, there are a couple of things you need to know about your camera.

First, your T3 Rebel records video at 720p (1,280 x 720) HD the only choices you have is recording at 29.97 or 25 fps.  This video size should be easy for MEP to handle. But.. read on

Second the T3 uses MPEG-4 / H.264 AVC compression, in a .MOV container.  There are a couple of things with the .MOV container that you need to be aware of.  You must have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer in order to get decent results with this container.  The other is if you are getting the "too high resolution" message, it likely means that the bit or data rates in the container are too high for your system to handle so you should also be getting a message that says "hardware acceleration will be turned off" or something like that.  That could very easily be the source of your lags during playback.  If you don't have enough CPU, RAM or disc to handle the file size created by high bit rates, you won't get good results and need to either upgrade your system or settle for lower resolution.

This is why we ask for your system specs on this forum.  In order to provide a reasonable answer, we need to know your Operating System, Ram, available disc space, size of the file you are trying to edit, where the file is located (on a hard disc, on a usb drive, on a SD card, etc".

Finally, regarding the "glitchy audio".  DSLRs are notorisously horrible for audio if you use the camera microphone to record the audio.  First because the microphone is of pretty bad quality and second because most including the T3 rely on auto level, because the camera does not allow you to set the audio level, you will get clipping, nothing, or very low audio levels which always sound "glitchy".

The T3 also has another problem in that the on board microphone is located here:

Which is exactly where many people often place the fingers of their left hand when holding the camera which will cut off the audio and generate noise if the fingers move across the microphone.  I did not read the T3 manual to see if there is a seperate audio input for a hot shoe mounted microphone but my Nikon D5000 does not have that input so I use a Zoom H1N audio recorder on the hot shoe mount to record all of my audio.  Yes you do need to synchronize the audio during editing but at least the audio quality is 100 times better than that recorded by the camera.

Please add more information about your system and try to be a little more specific about how you are going about getting the DSLR files into MEP, and ask more questions if anything here is not clear.

Good Luck,

George
