Downloaded free trial of Movie Edit Pro MX - problems with USB connection to Sony DCR-HC46

Bought MAGIX Movie Edit Pro several years ago and never succeeded in capturing decent video from my camera - message kept asking me to install Macromedia Flash but couldn't find suitable download. Didn't Adobe Flash Player supersede Macromedia Flash Player? I downloaded the latest Movie Edit Pro MX trial and message comes up the same (install Macromedia....) Also, I cannot get the program to recognize the camera's digital output with the USB connection. I'm using sony's USB driver that came with the camera. I know I have a USB connection as I can get the program to recognize the analog signal but not the digital.

I have 15 days remaining on my 30-day trial but need to have a digital interface before I'll consider purchase. Hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Bryan

Hi

I think your problem trying to capture is because the camera is a MiniDV (ie analog tape) and does not have an anolog to digital converter in it so you could use USB.

You should be capturing the video in MEP using the  Firewire connection.

You may need to install a Firewire card into your PC if you do not have one already.

Thanks, John,

Appreciate your quick response. Don't know why Sony refers to this as a digital camera. I do have a firewire connection to my computer but the camera docking station only has USB or AVI. Do I need a special cable?

Thanks,

Bryan

Hi Bryan

The cable you need is Sony part no VMC-IL4615 and is available from many retailers, search Google

The camera is digital and records the digital data to tape.  It is because the camera uses tape as the recording medium that you use the firewire with MEP to capture the video.

Most modern cameras now use memory cards or internal hard drives to record the video on.  This means you do not have to capture the video as it is already stored as a video file and can be copied direct to the computer.  My own preference is for a camera with an internal hard drive.

Hi John,

You have been so helpful and I really appreciate the info. I'll set about to locate the cable you described and hopefully that will sovle my problem.
