domains

smalldairy wrote on 8/26/2013, 10:35 AM

On my Magix overview page I have two domains listed, one that I purchased (smalldairy.info) and the standard Magix domain (http://smalldairy.magix.net/).

I am having a problem getting an Ecwid shopping cart to work correctly within the smalldairy.info site because of the constraints of the theme I'm using in Xara, and would like to put the cart somewhere else, so that the theme is not an issue.  Can I put the cart on the smalldairy.magix.net domain and point to it from my smalldairy.info web site?  The magix.net domain is currently unassigned, except that http://smalldairy.magix.net/public is assigned as an FTP site and contains exactly the same thing as the smalldairy.info site (also FTP).  What's that about?

Obviously I really don't understand how domains and subdomains work.

Hi,

Maybe I am not undestanding you correctly, but why would you not insert a blank page in your site, insert your Ecwid shopping cart (whatever that is) and build whatever theme you want around that cart?  You could point the cart to a sub directory and build another site around it but why would you?

Hi

Which Xara software are you using?

If the theme you are using allows you add HTML / javascript to one of the web pages then there is no reason I can see why it should not work.

The Ecwid widget only links to the Ecwid site which hosts the shopping cart via the few lines of code you add to a web page.

Insertion of the shopping cart at that point on the page is done by the web browser when it loads your page.

One problem you may come across, and there is nothing you can do about it, is if the viewer of the web page has cross domain browing turned off - then the widget will not appear.

I am using Xara WebDesigner Premium MX.  The problem is that when I add the shopping cart to my web site, it is apparently in some sort of "container" produced by the Xara theme that I chose for my site.  (This information I found on an Ecwid forum.)  The shopping cart is too small and only a few items fit on each page, so the visitor is forced to visit 9-10 pages to look at all the options, instead of the maximum of 3 that I prefer.   I've tried changing the number of items per page, but when I do that, there are internal scroll bars, both horizontal and vertical, on the cart -- in addition to the regular scroll bar on the side of the page.  I've tried changing the height of the placeholder, but still get the internal scroll bars. I've tried changing the font size, but that's only marginally helpful.

I have asked the Xara forum how to get a blank page within my site, but all I get are answers like, "why would you not want to use our wonderful themes and integrate your cart into the theme"?  Well, I would like to, if it would work correctly, but no one will tell me how to make it do that!  I am not one of those people who has the luxury of playing on the computer all day every day.

I have already done way too much other work on the site to build my theme around the cart.  My site is mostly informational, with incidental sales through the cart.

Hi

Without seeing the actual HTML source code generated by Xara Webdesigner or the integration code, it is difficult to tell what is wrong.  Do not post any code or the integration code here as it may contain confidential data

I suspect the Ecwid widget is embedded in an iframe, table or div in the web page and it is the dimensions of this that is too small.

A quick search of the Ecwid knowledgebase indicates that the container for the gadget needs to be at least 500px wide.

Is there a working, albeit wrong size page, that we can look at?

George  -- because I can't figure out, and no one will advise me, how to insert a truly blank page into my site.  Xara only gives you the option to add more theme pages.  If you click on "insert new page" it includes the theme, which includes the constraints.

However, I finally got a response from a Xara person a couple hours ago suggesting a different way to resize the page that I didn't know about.  (Utilities > options)  That worked.

Sigh.  I wish there were books like the old "Illustrator Bible" or "Using Photoshop" books that detailed how to do stuff like this. I guess those are a thing of the past, and we are stuck with hoping that someone will answer a question on a forum.  I still haven't gotten answers from the Ecwid forum, and I've been going back and forth with Xara support for about 3 weeks.

However, I greatly appreciate the responses I've received here.
