Does setting the project to match import set _all_ parameters

OldNick1 wrote on 11/18/2022, 6:39 AM

MS 2023 Platinum.

When you import the first video to a project, you are offered the chance to make the project match the video.

Does this set all the parameters, such as data rate etc? So assuming I use the same video format as the import, when exporting, does it retain quality?

Alternatively is there a way to set the quality of the exported video?

Thanks for any help

@OldNick1

Nick, the data rate is not considered when the program sets the "movie" settings (not "project" settings) and monitor to match the imported clip, so quality is neither retained or reduced by the act of importing a file. The settings that are adjusted are those shown on the E screen (File>Settings>Movie): Frame size (width and height), frame ratio and frame rate.

The exported quality is controlled solely by the export dialogue (eg the format, MPEG 4, HEVC, WMV) and in particular the Advanced screen, where you can set such things the bit rate and the coding quality. The higher the bitrate you set/accept, the better the quality.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
