Does DVD quality affect file size?

rickduley wrote on 9/9/2012, 11:35 PM

Burning DVDs, even for movies of less that two hours, ALWAYS requires a DL disc.  Dubbing the same movie with my DVD/VCR player only requires a single layer disc - that's without removing the ads as I do when I am using MAGIX Movie Edit Pro MX Plus Download Version.

I have dropped the quality setting but it seems to make no difference.  If I have this problem with a 1:45hr movie, what will happen when I try to burn "Dr Zhivago"?

rickduley,

Are you going into the 'Encoder settings...' window? Many users recommend setting the quality slider to the max of 15 and then click on 'Adjust bit rate' to have MEP work out the best that will fit on your disc.

Hi

As you have found, the quality slider will have little influence on the file size created as this only controls the accuracy of the encoder and only manifests as fewer artifacts in each frame. This requires longer encoding (file creation) times and the effect on the picture is often subtle.

File size is directly related to bitrate - a lower bitrate will mean more compression of the information in the picture with a significant affect on file size. Too much compression will create a low quality picture though, as much of the information in each frame is considered redundant by the encoder.

There should be a button in the burn dialog that lets you automatically adapt the settings so that your movie will all fit on the disc inserted for the burn.

Obviously yes

There is a program called DVD shink

which will put big movies onto standard discs with compression, remove all the pre and post-movie faff to allow more room for the fil.

It's simpler than doing it in this program too.
