Displaying audio waveform problem

andrew-pgh wrote on 5/1/2023, 3:54 AM

Hello group. I hope someone can help.

Today I purchased and installed magix movie studio 2023 platinum because my older Vegas movie studio 14 can not handle 4k video.

I imported a video with sound into Magix Movie Studio and I also imported an mpg audio file. I want to align the mpg audio to the audio in the video. It will be so much easier to align if I can see the waveforms for both audio tracks.

I managed to separate the original video into audio and the video on 2 separate tracks. There is no waveform visible for the audio that came from the video.

For the MPG audio that I imported (track 6) .... a waveform is displayed below the track that I imported to on track 7.

WHY is there no waveform associated with the audio that I split from the original video and how do I get a waveform to display???

I posted a short video on youtube to better explain the problem.

Sorry I posted wrong link to video . I have now posted correct link!

thank you!

Andrew, that video appears to be about a problem with Facebook.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

Does selecting the audio track and pressing Shift + E or right click Create wave form display, not generate the waveform?

Do note that some 'odd' audio formats may not create a waveform.

In the program settings Video/Audio tab is the Automatically create waveform during import checked?

If you want the audio on a seperate track uncheck the Video/Audio on one track option on the same tab?

Thanks for reply.

FYI I corrected video link. Hitting Shift - E does not have any effect. And right clicking (see video, )does not bring up any option to display waveform.

As for the odd audio format theory.... Recall that I split the single audio/video track to two tracks. Would this have worked if the audi format was "odd"??

The audio portion of the video file 2303 kbps, stereo 48.000kHz is displayed in video.MOV file properties.

Hi,

This has happened to me occasionally and it's usually a problem with the source file.

You have done everything right so far. I did notice that you have tracks 1 and 2 muted, so be sure to unmute the audio track.

What are your project settings. Shortcut E. Show a screen shot.

First, try this. Start a new project and import the problem file.

Make sure to have the same project settings as the video clip.

Do you get the waveform? Do you hear the audio when you play it back?

If no waveform but you hear the audio, save the test file. Close the project (just open a new project).

Go to the location of the video clip on your hard drive and delete the 2 temporary files with the same name but extensions .H0 and .HDP. One of these is the waveform and reopening the project will recreate the temp file.

Reopen the project. Do you now see the waveform?

Second, if still no waveform, and if playback of video and audio is fine, File, Export movie, and select Video as Magix Video. This makes a .mxv file that only Magix programs can read. Make sure to use the same settings as the video clip. Export to either the same location as the original file or somewhere else. Import the mxv file to the timeline.

Do you get the waveform now?

EDIT: BTW, remember that Vegas MS and Magix MS are two different programs and that the track protocol in Magix MS is different. It goes by track number with 1 being the lowest, meaning background. 2 is higher, 3 is even higher, etc. So overlays go on higher numbered tracks. Your background stays on track 1 (or a lower nimbered track than overlays). No need to insert tracks to get overlays.

Interesting comments Browj2 , thank you.

Yes, I can hear both audio tracks, the one associated with the video, and the one I added into magix which I wish to process into the final video.

I took a look in the source video folder. Yep, there are two files, xxxH0 and xxx.HDP, though I did NOT save any test file. I will try closing the program and then re-open it and call up the project again.

I will also try deleting them, though I have a feeling this will not help.

Your idea to export the video then re-import it is a good idea.

Does it really matter in what order I stack the tracks? The end result is that I am going to mute the audio that was recorded with the video and replace it with the imported audio.

Thanks again for some good insight!

Hey, Browj2.

One of Your suggestions works!

I deleted those 2 files.

I Closed the program. Then restarted it. Loaded the project.

THIS TIME, I could see "right click for waveform" or similar wording as option.

I now have a half waveform which is a big improvement over not having anything.

Is there a way to turn this into a full waveform?

I did manage to line up the added audio track to the video. Job done!

Thank you!

Hi

. . . . 'Odd audio formats' . . . .

I was referring to encoding formats eg I have some video clips with audio recorded in PCM mono and they will not produce a waveform. Separating the audio on to separate tracks does not affect whether a waveform is created or not.

. . . . I now have a half waveform which is a big improvement over not having anything . . . .

See the comment I posted above again - the image shows you the program settings option for not getting the halfwave form of display.

For audio, no, for video, yes. That said, when you use the mixer, it's a good idea to consistently use certain tracks for audio so that you easily remember them. Keep track 5 reserved for audio as the program uses that track for any built-in sound effects/music.

Is there a way to turn this into a full waveform?

Yes. Look at your image of the Program Settings. Uncheck Half Waveform Display.

Hi

Just a tip - you can align your new sound track with your video providing they are recorded at the same time / location by Rt. clicking the video sound track and then choosing "Automatically align other sound tracks with this track". once done you can then mute or delete the video sound track and group the video picture and audio object. Works well!
