DESPERATE Vocal tracks

Hey Gang,

I have MAGIX Music Studio 12 and I am new to this. I have been successful at making multiple vocal tracks but how do I set up my vocal tracks so my voice does not sound dampened and the background is clear instead of staticy? Also do I need a certain microphone? I have a cheap one that you might use for karaoke and it has a jack plug in. Not sure. All I want is to mix my vocal harmonies so I can hear what they sound like and send to colleges for ideas etc. I don't need any special effects. Please help!! I'm so close....

Thank a bunch,

Tink

My guess is you've already answered your own question.  It sounds like you're probably using a substandard microphone.

I'd suggest usiing a decent quality microphone through a proper audio interface.

As far as tweaking what you have...,

Unless you have Audio Cleaning Lab, the only choice you have in MMM is to use the 10-Band Equalizer to filter out some of the hiss and enhance your vocals.

If the volume levels are low, you can "normalize" your tracks before (or during) export.

I agree that a good mike makes all the difference. You should also run the mike through a preamp mixing board if you can. Running the mike straight into the "mike input" on your computer gives you no control over volume or quality. I am using a Sure SM58 mike with a Yamaha MG82cx mixer. This also allows me to input a keyboard and whatever else through to the computer while adding effects like echo  live.
