Deleting Project Photos, Videos and Music

I am running HP Laptop with Intel i7-5500 CPU @ 2.40GHz, with 12GB RAM installed.  I also use external storage for projects, photos, etc, so as not to clog up internal storage, etc.  However, the last project I worked on, the whole process was laggy and slow.  I noticed that the external storage is now over half full (1TB).

This may be a really silly question.  And if it is, I humbly apologise.

Using MEP 2015: Once a project has been encoded into VIDEO_TS, VTS_01_0, etc. am I safe to delete all the project related stuff?  I am pretty sure that these files are all I now need, IF I don't want to work on anything again?  I only want to delete the project work, although I may delete some copied photos and videos.

That depends on whether you will want to go back to it at a later date - the project file itself is a text file containing information about the projects contents, all the edit settings, transitions etc and takes up very little space.

The only files I would remove are the proxy files, if you have used them, and the  .H0 and .HDP files. I never delete the source material ie original video, images and audio.

Check in the projects settings ( E key)  if you use proxy files.

 

If so then, when you have completed the project, you can delete the proxy files created - they are recogniseable by their names being in a format similar to these:

00294_mts_proxy_6a799caf06eabc11c2301dc2d516e9a8_3394a80fe73be6131cc1a71bd7f8ddfe.mxv

and

00294_mts_proxy_6a799caf06eabc11c2301dc2d516e9a8_3394a80fe73be6131cc1a71bd7f8ddfe_mxv.H0

They will be located in the same folder as the original video files used in the project - take care when deleting them, and will be recreated again if you have to go back to the project at some later date.

This should save you disc space.

Tip:

I also create a 'master' copy of any discs I have created in case I need to replace a working disc.

The masters are stored in a black disc cases, away from light in a cool place, to increase their longevity - I have discs 10 years old that are still readable.

If you do this you can also delete the projects disc image which is located in the Disc images folder specified in the programs settings.

Hi John:

So maybe it wasn't such a silly question, after all?  Your answer gave me great direction and also a good idea to keep the master copies locked away, just in case.  After only aroond a dozen MEP 2015 projects - some that did reduce family members to tears (in a good way) - I found there were 597 files of the .HO or .HDP file extensions stored happily away.  They are now deleted, so I will see how the housekeeping affects the next project.

Thank you for the clear and precise answer again.  I guess that once I've been 'playing' for 10 years, or so, I will be able to help others, too.
