AFAIK the only option is from 'File' >> 'Settings' >> 'Movie...', [E] key shortcut, but that only sets the number of tracks, not automatically delete unused ones.
You can enter a number in the field above the buttons but the minimum is 4. I just discovered that a right click at the left end of a track gives you to option of setting the track sizes individually.
If tracks are empty, the software when rendering is done not use it. Rendering is the final step grouping all video tracks in one. You melt or fusion all objects and all video tracks in one stream.
When you work use track to a minium this avoid CPU calculation for nothing.
Both yvon-robert, and Carl are absolutely correct. The question I have is why you want to delete tracks. I can understand wanting to delete the content of a track (which is a different question), but since empty tracks have no impact on file size, rendering speed or pretty much anything else there is no real reason to delete them. In fact if at some point you want to add certain types of effects, such as PIP and Collage, you are going to need extra tracks in order to create the effect.

George
You are right George. I realize they have no impact. However, I have been a professional editor for 14 years and come from using tools such as Avid, Premiere, and Vegas Pro. Pro editors have a thing about keeping their timelines clean, that's all! I understand that I am being picky, but it is just a feature that seems to be included in every other editing app I have used (and believe me, I have used them all, consumer and professional).
Here is an example of why I would like the ability to delete:
You can see in this timeline that track 5 is empty. I had some video in there, but then removed it from the project. Sure, I could just move the content from the tracks below up to fill in the space, but you can see that track 9 is my music track. It already has volume automation on it. When I move this track up, the automation curve does not move with it. So, therein lies my problem.
Oh well, as a pro editor, I am still very impressed with MEP and will continue to use it. It's just odd that this feature is not in there.
I had to smile at your reply. I have been editing video professionally for just over 30 years both linear and non-linear. In the old days, you just bounced the tracks up and all would be fine. The only problem with that was the tape loss from bouncing, not to mention the huge size and cost of the equipment you needed to do it!
I too have used virtually everything on the market today, and they all have their little quircks. I continue to use Magix because I really like the work flow especially the fact that any track can be whatever type of track that you want it to be. I now completely understand why you would want to just eliminate the unneeded track for the sake of a clean time line. I just make the no longer wanted track smaller in height so that I don't really have to look at it and also mute it just in case there are any file fragments left on the track. I too have used the Adobe, Sony and Avid products in fact I still have them and use them for some of the features they have over MEP, but especially in the case of the Adobe and Sony products, very poor stability, frequent crashes, and long rendering and export times (my experience). Even though I own all of the products above, in addition, I own and use only two others in addition to MEP. I use Corel Video Studio Pro, and Cyberlink Power Director, not for their editing features but for the add on applications that come with the "premium" versions because I could obtain the add ons cheaper by buying the editor than I could by buying the stand alone version directly.
I think your idea of having a track delete option would be a great feature to add to the next version of MEP as it would keep the time line clean and we would not have to worry about having a blank track in the work flow. However, I can live with what I have because this app rarely crashes which is not the case with some of the others.
Camtasia Studio start with minimum track view, during work we can add or open new tracks. The other solution is to return to the old day of Pinnacle Studio using 2 tracks and every body cry I need more track. Thank to Magix at least for track option.
Yvon-Robert is giving a bit of a history lesson, and that too makes me smile. I too remember the old days of NLE where we only had 2 tracks, then suddenly we wanted more and more and more. I actually had the old Pinnacle studio and originally thought is was great but the limitations were too much for me so I switched back to Linear Editing until some of the pioneer products came out. When that happened, it became all about RAM and to some degree disk. In those days, RAM and Disk were super expensive. The the systems and OS evolved to where RAM and Disk were affordable, and you no longer needed a MAC to edit video and life started to become better...
