Does it help if you zoom into the location, set the playback cursor (in timeline mode) to where you want the audio to start, then click on the audio track and move it... then the snap to should work into your favor.

It does seem that the more I zoom in the the tracks the harder it is to nudge things without causing the snapping effect.  So I will try to line things up without zooming in so far.

 

Do you know of a keyboard shortcut for nudge objects to the left or right??

Hi

AFAIK you can only nudge to a whole frame so you can only move the audio in 1/25 sec increments (for 25fps video) and so on.

As John says you need to zoom in if you want to drag accurately, or, if the audio is part of the video clip, use the Set video/audio offset dialog which appears as an option when you right click the audio track of the video clip.
