Creating camcorder effect?

Kraznet wrote on 4/6/2020, 7:56 AM

I bought Movie Edit Pro Plus for a friend and she is trying to create a camcorder effect for the video she is doing but she says she can't find a suitable effect to do this. Does anyone know of a way to do it using the MAGIX effects?

Thanks, Kraznet

@Kraznet

Can you be a little more specific about what exactly you mean by a camcorder effect?

Hi Jeff,

I have sent her a message asking to explain exactly what she means. I'll let you know when I hear back.

If you look up camcorder effect on the internet it comes up with basically changing the aspect ratio to the older analog screen sizes and changing the colour profile. Perhaps adding bit of softening to the image.

It won't be as easy as using a phone app that does it to phone video footage as a preset.

If you mean looking at the video as if recording and looking through the camcorder screen or viewfinder then they probably mean the 'frame' around the edge and REC and blinking red dot you used to see.

That would be even harder but achievable using 'Paint' and animating a few jpg or png files to produce the 'view-screen'.

Hi,

She replied and sent me a link to a video which is the kind of effect she wants. It's like you get from old VHS tapes where you get lines and basically glitches.

Also this one which shows tape footage with distortion.

The first one is possible using various plugins within MEP and liberal use of the key-frame editor and is serious editing and will take time, patience, and a lot of trial and error. I can't think of a way to automate this within MEP. I think, but may be proved wrong by another contributor here, that this will have to be done, bit by bit, manually.

The second one relies on obtaining similar footage as shown in that video and use it as an overlay to blend with the desired clip by green-screening it. That example is only available as a 720p export if you know how to do that from YouTube. You could try a video screen grab using MEP.

In the end both will be quite time consuming but fun if you are into editing. If not, you are going to hate the amount of work involved.

Hi

If you search the Internet you will find many examples of VHS overlays to produce the effects you are looking for using the search term:

vhs overlay green screen -youtube

This will exclude Youtube to give better results - these green screen effects are one of them.
