Could not start scan server VST2-SCANNER-32bit / VST3-SCANNER-64bit

I've found posts about this going back many years, but there doesn't seem to have been a solution - and I'm getting this issue regularly with my Vegas Pro 365 subscription (so latest versions of Vegas Pro 18 and Sound Forge Pro 15). I also have the latest version of Izotope RX8. I have Windows 10 64bit.

The problem happens each time I start up Sound Forge Pro. Sometimes, if I click on "retry" then the error will disappear and continue on to loading up the editor. Other times, I might have to click five or six times, each time getting the "cannot start scan server" error again. And there are times when it doesn't seem to matter how many times I retry, it just won't work. But if I then close down Sound Forge and start it again, then (after maybe one or two retries) the scan will continue and the editor will load.

Now, the strange this is that even if there is an error in the scan (and even when there isn't), I seem to have the same set of effects in my list. Except for RX8 voice de-click. That one is missing. When I previously had RX7, the effect was there. But I uninstalled RX7 and installed RX8 - and now the effect is missing.

What's going on? (I even did as instructed and added an exception to the scan-server executable file in my ESET antivirus system, and also tried pausing ESET entirely during the scan. But this didn't seem to make any difference.)

Any ideas of what I need to do? And could you please explain why the error is occuring in the first place. Maybe I need to remove some files? Or uninstall Sound Forge, or RX8 or clear out all the VST files in the Common Files folder. If I knew what the glitch is about then I'm happy to re-install everything if that will definitely help clear out the offending bits. Or maybe it's a registry error??

Thanks in advance

If you decide to uninstall / reinstall, (a good idea for both SF and RX) use a third-party uninstaller that can remove left-over registry entries and other pertinent data the OS uninstall leaves behind, which in usually the root of recurring issues.
Revo Uninstall and Geek Uninstall are two that have pro and freeware versions.

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users forum @gary-o.

Thanks. I have IObit Uninstaller. I did uninstall the various plug-ins, but the problem persisted (sometimes).

Although over the last few days this error hasn't recurred. So I must have done something somewhere else that fixed the problem. Maybe, as you say, some vestige left behind from some other software. I might have run various clean-up scanners or maybe a few Window restarts did the trick.

Good to know it's not a Sound Forge issue then... :)

I wrote this too soon. The VST scan errors have back intermittently. Sometimes I can click on retry 2-3 times and then the scan is completely without problem. Other times I have to close Sound Forge and restart it, and then it's fine again.

Bizarre...!

I realize this thread is old, but I'm having the same issues on all the MAGIX products I own that uses VST plugins. Sound Forge Pro 15 is what I use most to do minor edits and bit rate conversions on WAV files I want to add to my DAW (Studio One 5). The errors have been reduced somewhat by removing all the paths to the VST plugins except for the default MAGIX vst path. You would think the error wouldn't occur with their own plugins, and for what I do I really don't need any plugins. That being said, Sound Forge requires at least one path in the settings. Deleting all paths isn't an option. It's more of an annoyance than a show-stopper for me.

Sound Forge has a lot of problems. Some have been fixed, but there are still many to fix. Up to version 50, all issues will be fixed.

@JSmorada It mostly depends on your Windows settings. Overcautious firewall and antivirus programs will block the VST scanner. Current Windows 11 versions will also block them because the scanners are not certified as secure programs which is a new requirement on Windows 11.
