Convert an MKV file so Magix can work with it

I have an MKV file 3.7GB in size. I want to capture about 30 seconds of it to a separate file. Magix reports an error when it tries to open it. YouTube tells me to convert the MKV to an MP4 using VLC. I have VLC but when I follow their instructions, nothing happens. Is there some quick trick within Magix to make this happen?

Hi

. . . . Is there some quick trick within Magix to make this happen . . . .

We need more information about the program you are using and the MKV file.

Can you clarify which program you are using - ie what is the full name and version number as found under Help, About?

Does the error message in the program says if it cannot import the video file because it cannot find or does not have the necessary codec?

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse the MKV clip and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

Once we have the information, we can advise you better, there are better dedicated converters than VLC - eg Handbrake and AviDemux for converting video.
