Constant freezing

Brielle wrote on 4/4/2023, 6:54 PM

Hello,

The other day I purchased and downloaded Movie Studio Suite and then started using it today. I have used a different version in the past but due to one of my drives getting damaged, I do not have that one anymore.

I have no problem starting up the program and creating a project or opening a preexisting one from my files. It seems to freeze and crash only when I import a second, third, or fourth video file. (One of the times I was just clicking between the layouts for the "Project" window and it crashed.) I have imported by dragging the files from the file explorer to the program and through the import tab in the program. When I do drag from the file explorer then both the file explorer and the program freeze.

The video format is AVC or AVCHD (Im not super experienced so Im not sure but I did use Media Info to check). Additional info is in my signature.

Edit: I was able to import 20+ files to the program without crashing if I moved all of the files at once, but then when I tried to save the project using "save as", I chose the location and it crashed mid-save. (At 98%!)

Hi. Welcome to the user to user forums.

Have you made a typo in your system spec? Did you mean an nvidia GeForce 1060 3GB graphics card?

Can you also copy and paste the mediainfo information from one of your AVCHD video clips here please?

Previously were you using Vegas Movie Studio version 17 or earlier?

Ray.

Oh! Yes, I meant NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB.

I'm not sure what information you need on the video clip so I have attached two screenshots of the information.

I am not sure what version I was using previously, but it was only last year so it was most likely a newer one.

Hi.

Since Adobe has had court battles with Dolby labs over a dispute on royalty payments, the support for the AC-3 audio codec has been withdrawn from numerous video editing applications and could be the source of your problems. The only way now to edit such files as far as I know is only to apply butt joins with no other editing. If you can then get the program to smart render it will copy the video clips without having to re-encode the video frames. Older copies of the program can still cope and edit as before as far as I'm aware.

@Brielle, @CubeAce

Hi

The video format is standard h.264/AVC and should not cause me any issues - I have the same Sony camera, and AC3 Surround Sound imports correctly, however you will not be able to export the project as Surround Sound for the reason @CubeAce has given.

. . . . The only way now to edit such files as far as I know is only to apply butt joins with no other editing. . . .

There should be no problem editing these files and using different transitions.

See this tutorial on how to determine what is causing the crash and post the results.

Are the video files on the HDD in the PC or an external USB drive?

If on an external drive try transferring them to the internal drive and load them into the project from there.

Are the GTX 1060 drivers up to date - the latest version is 531.41 ( 31.0.15.3141 )?

In the Program settings, Device options tab, what are the Import, Processing and Export options set to?

Hi John.

I was referring to keeping the sound track as is. Maybe I misinterpreted the manual.

For MP4

Smart Copy: If this option is activated, unedited AVCHD material with hard cuts is transferred without changes. This drastically accelerates the encoding process. The transfer always takes place on the GOP borders is not frame-precise

and MPEG-2

Smart Copy: If this option is activated, unedited MPEG-2 material with hard cuts is transferred without changes. This drastically accelerates the encoding process. The transfer always takes place on the GOP borders is not frame-precise.

I took that to infer there would be no re-encoding of the file which would leave the sound track intact.

Hi Ray

I am puzzled by the mention of Smart copy - this has not been mentioned and is not involved when importing the video as @Brielle has commented:-

. . . . I have no problem starting up the program and creating a project or opening a preexisting one from my files. It seems to freeze and crash only when I import a second, third, or fourth video file. . . . .

Re Smart copy

. . . . I took that to infer there would be no re-encoding of the file which would leave the sound track intact . . . . .

The export options are stereo only, Smart Copy will not be utilised for video with Surround Sound audio as the audio has to be re-encoded to stereo.

@Brielle

Hi

Are you using Proxy files?

Do you have any 'All in one' codec packs installed eg K-Lite or similar?

If so uninstall it, it is not necessary, Movie Studio comes with the necessary codecs for the video formats it supports - HEVC (h.265) and Quicktime excluded.
