Change roller on my mouse to scroll up down not left right

doug_mccarron wrote on 1/22/2023, 10:06 PM

In every other windows program I use when I use the roller on my mouse the window scrolls up and down, but for some reason in Video Pro X and it's related software it rolls left and right, which confuses the **** out of me because I am expecting it to act like other window programs. I have never need to scroll left right at great jumps but often need to so up down but I have to use the elevator bar instead of the universal except these programs function of up down. I can't find anywhere to change this. Is it possible. And why is it left right when that isn't particularly useful?

Thank you

I find it particularly useful, much more useful than scrolling vertically. 😉

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

The default mouse wheel action is to scroll the timeline - this is the most common action required for editing and is a common usage of the mouse wheel in many video and audio editors.

To scroll vertically @CubeAce has given you one method, another is to hold the mouse pointer over the vertical scroll bar at the end of the timeline pane and use the wheel.

If you have not done so download the manual available under Help - there is an almost complete list* of keyboard and mouse shortcuts p 228 onwards, mouse functions with key modifiers are on p 231

* I say this as some users in the forum have found a few unlisted shortcuts.

Personally I, and another user, @browj2, use Contour Shuttles for many of the editing movements rather than the mouse.

HI

. . . .  I was asking if I can set it to act differently . . . .

This may be possible if your mouse has programmable buttons and/or wheel behaviour.

The modifier keys and the location of the mouse pointer, as I mentioned above - hover over the vertical scroll bar and scroll the wheel, are the only way to alter the mouse behaviour.

Hi Doug.

I think one of the reasons the mouse behaviour is not normally configurable within the Magix Editing programs is traditionally audio, photo and video editors various screens can be (and frequently have been in the past) individually resized and spread across two or more monitors. That way a monitor dedicated to just the timeline view is possible. Even to the point where turning a monitor 90° to portrait mode to allow for more tracks to be viewed at once. In that scenario it becomes more important to be able to scroll horizontally than vertically.

However it is now more often to find such programs on laptops than before when such machines would not have had the component capability compared to their desktop counterparts.

So, Magix has added a quite powerful tool to quickly zoom into any part of a project that no-one seems to talk about. Maybe most don't realize it's usefulness.

Please watch the video below. It is probably worth a couple of sentences at least if not a thousand words😅.

I hope this gives you an extra useful way to navigate your way around.

Ray.

Thank you for that information, that is not something I had looked at before. There is a lot to learn about the program and I haven't explored all of it so I appreciate your assistance on this.

No problem. All participating fellow users of the programs here do our best to offer solutions where possible. Some solutions work better for some people than for others depending on the enquirers previous experiences as they explore a new workflow pattern and program navigation to find the bits they expect to be able to use and in a manner they are used to. To find out that a particular base level need is not catered for in a previously, major adopted way to most other programs can be a major annoyance.

Audio, Photo, and Video programs are now so huge in their capabilities and scope of variable work flow options I doubt the majority of users including myself ever get to use or are aware of more than a few percent of the programs options.

You may or may not have noticed during the video that not all the tracks were initially visible, but one can drag the mouse below the last visible track and release the mouse button and that will then show those tracks within the new selection. I did not find this capability in the manual. I was wondering why the view was an option in the main monitor and it didn't make sense initially until I tried the idea of selecting a section of it using the mouse. At that point I did not expect the timeline view to change with it. I thought whatever would happen would just happen in the monitor view.

John EB and John CB have a lot of tutorials that cover many other aspects of the how to use the program but I don't think even they have covered all that can be done yet.

What I personally like about the Magix editors is there always seems to be more than one way to achieve a given goal, so if a workflow situation is not what I had previously used I can normally find another way of doing it that doesn't annoy me as much.

I hope that with a bit more use, you will find the editor easier and less frustrating to use, as on the whole it is quite powerful, relatively stable (save a few known bugs) , and adaptable.

Ray.

It is interesting, though the audio went out about 1/3 f the way in, but I was able to follow a lot of it visually. And I get that the manual is covering expectations of multiple wants for the software, thus there is an overwhelming amount of possibilities in the software. I just find it disorienting that the roller goes left right when every other software I use it is up down. Thank you for the Alt solution. Maybe someday I will actually read the entire manual. And all the other ones I have.

Thank you again.
