Installed Game driver, it didn't help with CAD, video editors seem to work ok, I'll see how it goes over the next day or two

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

Here is my effort. Like John EB, I did it in FHD 25fps.

I had a lot of trouble at first and at last with both Xara and VPX14. The bug that I raised with Magix about this is even more extensive than I thought. I managed to crash both Xara and VPX14 separately. VPX froze on a simple attempt to copy/paste the background blur from one clip to another. Sometimes it worked perfectly, allowing me to go back into Xara multiple times to make adjustments where I didn't like the results. The last attempt to fix up slightly one of the Xar objects cleaned them all out. Fortunately, I had exported the whole thing first. Maddening.

The young subjects move at different speeds and gaits and bounces, requiring close framing and thus more adjustments.

One of the things that you can do in VPX is to put a small amount of Artistic blur on the masks. This softens the edges. I also lightened slightly the blurry background as it seemed to make the masks less obtrusive.

Here is what the timeline looks like. One of the mask objects is actually an avi that I exported from Xara before having to shut down. The rest are the XAR objects after having been uncerimoniously emptied.

Below is a shot of a typical Xara animation showing the frames and the masks. This was just for illustration as the real ones had a smaller intervals between frames for tweening - default shown is 0.5s, I used many at 0.1s. The masks are coloured and named and moved, resized and reshaped if necessary when the frame is copied at the next interval. Note that the video advances at the same time. Once done, I turn on all frames and make all objects visible, select all, make white. Then exit back to VPX.

The biggest bug is that the XAR objects don't get saved and are wiped out if the project is closed. I really wish that Magix/Xara would fix this once and for all.

EDIT: I should point out that I should have used multiples of 0.04 or 1/25th of a second for frame advancement in Xara. I normally use 29.97 videos, thus 0.1 second would advance the video by 3 frames. I think that it actually did anyways.

Any way that you do this is very time-consuming.

Hi John.

A very neat and flowing render. Certainly less obtrusive than my own efforts. It's a pity Xara seems that unstable and I'm surprised you had trouble with VPX freezing. If you had problems with just doing that then I hate to think what would have happened to me with all the additional content I eventually added to the whole project. I didn't personally bother masking faces behind the perspex casings unless they happened to be clearer. Often the faces were almost as blurred as in the areas where I added masks. I also didn't bother with the backs of heads.

I think my eventual method was slightly different to both you and John EBs versions. I could not get the mask John used to work within MEP. I ended up using my own custom masks as the results with the supplied masks within MEP did not work well in the multiple lighting conditions throughout the whole project.

That is the same spot in the video I gave out for the challenge.

Compared to the whole length of the project. Above is just the whole of that one scene.

Also there was much more dynamic camera movement from the cameras auto tracking in some places than in the example I gave out. I did not think it fair as an exercise to give out to the wider community. Also it was for me at least a large project.

This is what my final masks look like.

And the final video.

Masks start at 8:07 on and off onward.

Ray.

Hi Gid

If the CAD program makes use of the Nvidia then stick to the Studio Drivers, that is one of the design purposes for the SD drivers, another is video and image editing.

The high frequency of updates is mainly for games programs, when the SD drivers were in a separate branch for updates they were much less frequent.

Hi John, Gid.

Somewhere in among all the blurb I read through (sorry for not being precise but I read a lot of stuff and hardly ever remember where I read it precisely) I noticed that it said that if you had the nvidia control panel installed on your machine as well as another GPU software application installed on a machine, that the two could cause conflicts and misreporting of the data. That is what prompted me to uninstall the Gigabyte software I had running for my 1650 Super GPU. Since then I've noticed an increase in performance generally and my mouse that has been playing up for a long time now (on and off) has become as responsive as I would expect a mouse to be,

There was also the odd happenings to some applications when moved from one monitor to the other or stretched between the two which has now gone away.

On second thoughts I may have read that about the ASUS graphics software on their site. Either way removing the Aorus Engine from my system, it seems for me at least to have been helpful.

I do have the nvidia control panel installed.

. . . . I noticed that it said that if you had the nvidia control panel installed on your machine as well as another GPU software application installed on a machine, that the two could cause conflicts and misreporting of the data.

Close - if you have other 3rd party GPU tools for measuring the GPU performance, temps etc, which do not read the memory available data as 64 bit they can miscalculate the total available graphics memory, IIRC the example given was 2GB would be calculated and displayed as ~ 450MB.

The other items are, as I said above, hardware specific eg with connected HDMI Tv's being used as amonitor and a 'normal' monitor for dual or triple screen working, linking with other GPUs etc.

. . . . I do have the nvidia control panel installed. . . . .

I don't, I should so as I can tweak some PhysX settings for the 2 other programs which use the RTX GPU

It took me about the same time, faster with practice. As you can see, I split up the video so as to not have a large XAR object.

Try doing a short section like this one:

It's just over 9 seconds and has several figures to hide and follow - first the girls, then the guys. Doing this took me about 10 minutes, including going back and fixing some frames.

Hi John.

What I don't understand is why when I uninstalled the Aorus Engine app from my system that my mouse which was very prone to freezing at odd moments and very fussy about the surface it would work on suddenly became a normal responsive mouse again or why My Cubase program that although I could extend the editing space across the two monitors without problems but lose any object I placed in the area of the Intel powered monitor would disappear until it was dragged back the the nvidia powered monitor should suddenly no longer be a problem. I did nothing else to the system at that point but all previous problems I had that had niggled me for a very long time just stopped happening.

I can't believe it is coincidental.

Ray.

Was Aorus installed by default? It is not necessary as you do not game which is what it is designed for.

Hi John.

I never gave it a second thought as it was part of the options when I looked at the Gigabyte website. I used it to keep an eye on fan speed curves to try to make it a bit quieter when not under load and to ramp the fans up earlier under load. It was certainly a 'not known issue' for me and had never looked at it as a possible cause, suspecting more the Intelimouse control app. I did mention the Aorus app was installed on the forums some time back when conversing with pmike (American Mike also missing from the forums since not long after the covid outbreak.) We got similar graphics cards around the same time.

I never had problems with a similar app on my previous GPU. (Not Gigabyte).

Here is an image showing the difference between VPX14 and MEP2021 for Attach to picture position.

That is still in the reasonably good part of VPX14, then the overlay image goes up towards the right and off the screen; in MEP2021, the overlay stays with Bernadette.

Also, in MEP2021, we see the effect in the kf area (Pin object x/y), nothing in VPX14.

I presume that this bug has been raised with Magix? Should I add it to the list?

Not good.

Hi John

I raised this bug back in November last year, then forgot all about it due to holidays until Ray issued the challenge and it was to be my first method to use rather than manual adjustment.

This was the comment I made at the time:

An issue with the above effect appears to have been introduced with MEP 2022 and
VPX 13 as a result of the Anchor point being made movable and defaulting to the
centre of the screen instead of the old way referencing the top left corner (0,0).

Leaving the anchor point in the centre,  the object being attached is offset
after running the effect analysis.  Setting the Anchor point to top left corner -
the old 0,0 reference point, and the object tracks correctly.

Looks like maths for calculating the position of the object are not taking into
account the anchor point not being at centre of the object.

Will ask what is happening, as the ticket has not been closed.

Hi John EB,

I think that the problem is more extensive. We should at least be able to see something in the effects kf area.

Hi John

There is a possible workaround, two actually, however the end result appears to be the same - see if you get the same behaviour.

Apply the indicated position control to the object that is going to follow the selected area of the video before or after applying the Attach to picture position

Hi John

Here is an example of the 'workaround'.

The Attach to picture position effect has already been applied to the title object, with the title object top left as seen at the start of the video clip - it does lose track between 7 and 8 seconds of the clip the title was attached to.

I am beginning to wonder if this is by design, or a serendipity effect of the bug, you do not have to do the Attach effect again if you want to alter the position of the attached object to the subject.

This could also explain the lack of KF being visible.

Hi John EB,

I did what you indicated but then dragged the title back down over Bernadette. Then I applied the effect; the title followed the dog but in the wrong place. At the end, I clicked on the upper left position button and the title went to the correct location and followed the dog.

I tried again with the checkmark, zoomed out to 350H, clicked upper left, dragged the image back over the dog, applied the follow effect and it worked as you indicated.

I tried again with a title and it ended up looking like your example.

Very strange and we should not have to do any of that.

Hi John

Thanks for confirming that.

. . . . Very strange and we should not have to do any of that. . . .

Agreed the previous method was to position the title /object where you wanted it to start tracking, then use the effect specifying the 'attachment point'. The downside was, as I commented above, that you had to redo the tracking if you wanted to change the offset.

I heard back from Magix, my ticket had been closed - I had no notification of this. New ticket to be raised.

Hi John EB,

I did not raise a ticket with Magix about this. I have added it to my list as Bug 54 and will submit it. Have you heard back from Magix about your renewed ticket about the "Attach to picture position" effect?

It's been a while since my last challenge but after replies on another topic I thought it might be fun (or not) to have a go at making multiple masks with either VPX or MS. You can use any third party plugin you choose or just reply on the offerings within the program.

Only rules.

Only use footage from the clip supplied.

All children under the age of 16 must get their faces blurred where they are in enough focus to be able to be recognised.

At least one minute of contiguous section of the file supplied must be completed.

Only the face area is to be masked. A small amount of overlap is fine but no whole body or group masking allowable.

As much of the surrounding areas around the masks must be left alone as possible.

The mask itself should be as unobtrusive as possible please, do not use solid colours or patterns within the mask or replacement images.

The clip will be available for download until the end of the weekend. After that anyone else wishing to join in will have to ask here and I may send them a link for downloading.

I have spent a lot of time on this myself and I am still refining the results. I have much more to do than the clip you are going to download. If anyone is going to convince me another way gives better results then I would like to see for myself.

I have no problem with whether the workflow is difficult, fast or slow. Only the quality of the finished masks.

Post results back here within the next three weeks if possible please.

The file I am supplying has no sound track and a not over intrusive watermark. Mainly to make it as useless for unwanted copying or theft for further use as this is a public forum.

The video beneath is what I have attempted so far. The scene change you will not have but is just added to show the progress I'm making. I have all the groundwork laid down and it is just a matter of tweaking or trying different methods of blending.

Here is the link for the file [REMOVED]

I hope some of you will find this a challenge.

I will be surprised if anyone takes it up. 🤣🤞

Ray.
