Capturing VHS

discburn wrote on 7/25/2013, 2:02 PM

Hi, I'm using MEP MX Premium running on Vista Ultimate.

I have some VHS tapes I want to capture so as to convert into a file format for archiving and editing.

My VHS Player only has a SCART Out.  But I have an adapter to the SCART that gives me Composite Video and Audio Out.

My Dell laptop, which runs MEP MX, has USB and Mini DV IN Ports.

Is there a way to capture the VHS footage into MEP MX using a specific VHS to USB or VHS to DV Card that is compatible with Vista?

Thanks in advance,

Seamus

You need a USB-item for converting the analog signal. Search for "VHS" on this forum, I got 26 results.

Hi,

You ned a video converter to convert analog VHS video to USB port on your computer. See your computer store or large surface store to buy the converter. RCA cable video and sound or SVHS cable and cable.

Thanks very much for the answers.

Will those VHS to USB converters be recognisable to MEP MX?

Or do I need to get a 'special' one?

Hi

So long as the correct drivers are installed just about any USB Video converter should work.

Tip:  get a converter that also converts the audio as well, some such as an old KWorld device I have only convert the video and pass the audio through to the computers sound card for conversion - this can result in a lag in the audio and loss of sync.

Magix have there own USB converter device, other brands such as Terratec are also known to work.

Thanks John,

I'll check out the Magix converter.  Maybe Magix will sell me one without the software.

Hi,

I use the Sabrent VD-GRBR Capture Box, to transer VHS and Video 8 to my hard drive and it works pretty well.  I like the fact that it came with all the cables I needed, and will process S video as well. I only paid $35 Canadian for it so it is relatively inexpesive.

If you are in the US or Canada, you can buy it at TigerDirect.

Hi George,

Do you use MEP MX to capture video using the Sabrent VD-GRBR?

OR

Capture with the Sabrent software, then edit in MEP MX?

Will it work for PAL in Ireland?
