Cant import VOB file

Movie Edit Pro 2016

I am a newbie here, so any help would be greatly appreciated:

I am trying to import VOB files from old dvd's

It seems that more times than note when I try to import the first VOB file ( often times there are more than one ), but I seem to have this problem with the first one.)

I get an error message that prevents me from importing the file. The error:

" The file format of  ( then provides the full path name ending in VTS_01_1.VOB ) can not be read "

"Please make sure that the drive is not full or write protected" It then goes on to talk about user authorization etc. :

Details indicates "Error 0x2701: error in sequence header"

so...

1) I copied the file from the dvd to the Magic Edit folder.

2) I ejected the DVD

3) I closed out windows media player which opened to try to start playing the DVD.

4) If I insert the dvd and just let WMP open and start to play the dvd, it plays fine.

5) I can not find any other open applicaitons that might be "holding on " to this file.

6) I can successfully copy OTHER VOB files from the same disk and import them into Magic Edit

7) This has happened a number of times and always seems to happen with the FIRST VOB

Big time help really appreaciated.  Just getting started with this and don't want to get discouraged.

Hi

. . . . " The file format of  ( then provides the full path name ending in VTS_01_1.VOB ) can not be read " . . . . "Error 0x2701: error in sequence header" ....

That suggests you are trying to open VOBs from a commercial dvd.

If this is so then it is quite likely they are copyright protected, in which case you will not be able to open them.

Also did you activate the MPG codec in MEP?

The DVD in question was generated from one of the first Sony DVD writers when I converted origina VHS tapes to DVDs.

Regarding the Codec:  I still see it listed under the "Install additional software" section under the help menu.

I unchecked the "Hide installed Components" button, but no additional items were listed. THere are two codecs listed  MPEG - 2 ( Main Concept ) and MPEG-4(Main Concept) .

Are those the ones you are refering to? which one would I activate, the MPEG4 ( I have been able to export a number of MPG4 formated videos. )

Thanks

Hi

. . . . THere are two codecs listed  MPEG - 2 ( Main Concept ) and MPEG-4(Main Concept) . . . . .

I was referring to the original MPEG-1 format - this should activate the first time you drag a mpg file onto the timeline.

. . . . was generated from one of the first Sony DVD writers when I converted origina VHS tapes to DVDs . . . .

Was this a self contained video/dvd player recorder or captured on computer then written to DVD?

Is the original DVD on a DVD-RAM disc?

Did you copy the whole DVD to the computer or just the VOBs?

If just the VOBs - then try copying the entire disc to the computer and then load the VOB into MEP.

Can you analyse the VOB with MediaInfo and post the results from the Tree view in the program - this view gives the most detail.

Is MEP patched up to date - the latest version is 15.0.0.90 ?

Johnebaker

I am setting up to do the tests you suggested and will advise.

In the mean time:

MPEG-1 I believe I recall it activating when I first installed. I have reviewed the MEP menus but do not see a place where I can see all activated codec. Does one exist?

The original capture device was  stand-alone unit sold by Sony. You merely streamed the video into connections on the back, and presto - DVD.

DVD-RAM disk - I do not think it is a RAM disk. Not sure how I would know. Probalby did this 8 years ago.

Copying VOB's _ I did oringally copy only the VOB files. I am now setting up a folder on my desktop and will copy all the folders and files from the DVD into that folder. Once I have done that, will copy the VOBs to MEP and advise.

I have downloaded MediaInfo. Once the VOBs and everything else are copies into this test desktop folder, I will analyze and post as requested.

MPE was NOT up to date, but I did just do an update and installed all so it should be fully updated.

Thanks for your help. Should have all done by tomorrow night.  appreciate your assistance. Just getting started with MPE and dont want to start out frustrated so your assistance is greatly appreciated.

johnebaker:

I installed media info.

I copied the entire contents of the DVD to my had drive, ( all folders. all files.  )

I then started to copy the VOB files one at a time to MPE.

First file was the troublesome VOB - 1

I then tried to import and received the same error.

I ran MediaInfo over that file, in tree format as you requested.
