Cannot open file

fffsouth wrote on 5/26/2014, 7:08 PM

I was at the final "save" for a song I made (all day long :( ) when all of the sudden, the program froze.  I had to shut the computer down since EVERYTHING froze.  When I restarted it, the song I worked on all day long came up with an error box of "Cannot open file."  The properties show that it is still there... but it will not open.  :(  I've shut down the computer and restarted it to no avail.  Windows 7 witha quad processor.  Thanks, Dave

You did not mention the Music Maker version you are talking about.

Anyway this is a common scenario for that there is a BAK file means Backup file in case if some thing goes wrong. Did you set your Music Maker to Backup in case of problems?

Do as follows: File/Open arrangements  (Ctrl+O) when a window is opened click on the pull down menu and select All files. Now you will be able to see your desired file with the BAK extension. Click on it and open. If you got successful in opening please save it as an arrangement.

Another way is to locate UserData folder could be on C drive hidden files (Application Data) Magix/Music Maker(version name)/UserData/Crash. In this Crash folder you could find Music Maker files by the same title possibly. Better try your luck. When you found any just double click on it and it will be opened as normal file but got to save immediately.

Please let us know if you are sucessful in "saving" your project, as nihons advice is usually good and your question has been asked by others in one way or another....as nihon says "...common scenario...."

Thank you Nihon!  I found the BAK file with your advice. Your advice saved me about 6 hours of work!

Helo fffsouth,

I have Magix Music Maker 2014 trial versio.n I am experiencing that same problem you mentionned in an early post : I spent hours on a song and then at the very last "Save", the whole thing froze. So I restarted the computer and then tried to open it. But it gives me an error window that says "Cannot open file". Now I also saw there was a back up file of the same material that hd been saved automatically. I clicked on it and it opened the 3 first times, then sme thing, now it wont open.

I am so frutrated and dont know what to do : Can you help me with this?

I am asking myself is it because I am using the Trial version???.....Because the thing is that the fil I am trying to open has gotten to 278 KB and then there are other project files that i was working on but that are with much less material (Like 30-60 KB).....And they can be opened.....but not the one with the 278KB.....So I wonder mabe this is a trick from Music Maker so that you buy the full version or something......

But again I am not sure of anything. Thanks for your help.

My email just in case :

The trial version you downloaded becomes the program you get if you decide to purchase,  so its not the trial program that is the issue.  It sounds like you followed Nihons advice and were able to "fix" the problem as you were aable to re-open it 3 times and then you got back into trouble.  I would suggest you follow Nihos advice again and do exactly as he advises....hopefully you will be sucessful and then I suggest you save your project to another device or the "cloud" or somewhere other than your computer.  You can also go back in time on your PC and do a reset to an earlier date and perhaps save your project from there.
