Can't find music files in my back up external hard drive

My 3 year old Toshiba satellite  laptop has crashed and I get dreaded black screen . I have music maker 2014 premium bundle and windows 7 operating system.I've been advised that I need to backup all files then reboot computer. Friend has backed up files in an  external hard drive but we can't find the saved music compositions in the external drive. Where does magix music maker put my saved music compositions. When I create a composition and save it, it saves in the directory that magix has selected but don't know what that directory is. I don't recall ever selecting a specific directory for saving these files. I normally open MM and then open past compositions to find my saved songs. Where would they be and what would these files name end in. A search of my  external back up is not bringing up the song names that I saved them as.

If I haven't saved them in the back up then I'll have to back up again. I'm scared........any help would be great. Cheers

Hi

. . . . laptop has crashed and I get dreaded black screen . . . . If I haven't saved them in the back up then I'll have to back up again . . . .

Is the laptop working or not?  The above two statements appear to contradict each other.

Music Maker project files have a file extension of   .MMM.

If they are not on the backup drive and the Toshiba is not working at all then there is a solution which may work to recover the project files.

Assuming Toshiba hard drive is OK and the laptop is out of warranty, remove it from the laptop and then

  1. plug it into another computer (not a laptop)  via the appropriate cables.

  2. or if you have a USB Hard drive adapter then use this on PC or laptop.

Locate and copy the project files to another computer.

If you do not feel comfortable taking the drive out of the Toshiba then get your computer repair specialist to do this for you.

Thanks Johnebaker, that's what we have done. My friend backed my computer to an external hard drive. But as I wasn't there when he did it  I'm not sure what he chose to back up. So when I opened up the backup files I couldn't find the magix song files I composed. I'll try searching the .mmm files.  If I can't find them I'll have to redo the backup. My computer works but all I get is a black screen with working curser. That's what I mean by the statement you quoted.I can get into F8 and F12.  What directory does magix store these files in ?
