I would like to avoid the sound card & Windows mixer altogether. This would be both for recording (most important) and playback (less important since I can use Foobar or another player for that). Thanks
. . . . avoid the sound card & Windows mixer altogether. . . . .
To what purpose?
For playback this is not possible - a sound card is essential to get audio out of the computer or in if not using a USB sound device such as a microphone / audio to USB converter etc.
Foobar or any other player rely upon the prescence of a sound card. or onboard sound chipset.

Thanks for your response, John. I'm already bypassing the card & mixer for output, using a DAC for that with an ASIO driver. I'm more interested in bypassing them when recording streaming audio with ACL. I had done a test recording last night & there seemed to be a difference, pretty subtle but still there, when comparing a live stream to a recorded version of it. I thought that might be from it going from stream to sound card/Windows mixer to storage/file.. I guess I'm looking for something like ASIO (if it does indeed accomplish this) that would send the stream directly to the file I'm saving & if there would be a way to get ACL to assign that particular device, software, or what ever it should be called, to its input section. Thanks again.
