Burning Quality - I have a project which I  have worked on for months.  I orginally burned several DVD's with great quality.  After a few months, I went back to burn ADDITIONAL COPIES and the DVD quality is now jumpy and broken, as is the project file?  (I did not re-encode because no changes were made to the file)What happened and how can I fix? HELP!!  2 1/2 hour project now a mess....

Hi

Did MEP ask you if you wanted to burn the existing image of the project?  I do not mean the Encode, Encode all options, but the message that tells you the project has already been rendered to DVD?

As you did not do a re-encode of any kind then the original DVD files should be still on your hard drive in a folder of the same name as the project in the folder specified in the programs file path setting for Disc images

Have you installed any other video or video converter software or codec packs since the project was last burned successfully?

I never use MEP to burn more copies unless I have made changes to the project.

I always keep a master copy of every DVD or BD I have burned so I can use Nero to burn more copies.

johnebaker:  Not sure if this is the proper way to respond to you...First thank you...second to answer a couple of your questions:

  • MEP at the burn prompt I am asked if I want to use (VTS_01_1.VOB) or encode and I select "use"., as I am happy with the last burn. I assumed this pulled the last burned DVD file - which is filed in Disc Images, right?  BUT the file it burns NOW has skips and jumps, jerky play.  Nothing like the orginal.  It is perplexing. 
  • When I go to the project to see if it is jumpy, unfortunatley it too is jumping now?

 

  • When you "keep a master copy" - is that on hard disc or on your computer. (1.) if on your computer what format to you export in (2.) if on hard disc how do you upload it to copy.

Sorry to sound so elementary about this, but I was so proud of my 2hr 45min movie and now it is a mess.  I am sick about is as it is family history interviews which cannot be reconstructed in any way.  I am truly depserate.

This is the correct way to resond - it may seem a little strange responding by 'answering' your own question but that is the correct way.

You made the correct selection in picking Use - MEP should then use the existing VOBs.

In the preview window it mat appear jumpy - the cause of this depends on many things and may not be the fault of MEP.

My master copies are on external hard drive(s) as the complete DVD or BD file structure ie the folder in the Disc Images folder  is coped to the external drive(s)  and also burned as DVD or BD.

You can check that the VOBs paly OK on your computer - Windows Media Player is capable of playing them to see if they cause problems.

All is not lost so long as the original video clips, images and sound clips (if used) are still on the computer.  MEP is a none destructive editor so the original files will not be changed in any way.  You can reconstruct the project.

Clips like these are very precious and I would highly recommend backing them up to good quality DVD - at least 2 copies and keep them in black DVD boxes out of bright light and sun - I have just used some 5 year old backups and they are fine. 

Backing up to memory cards or USB stick is not recommended - these can fail catestrophically and without warning.

johnebaker: THANK YOU again.  I am still trying to figure this thing out. Could you explain each of these files which are in my Disc Image Folder?  Can I copy them over to my hard drive. 

I still have the issue with the file jumping/sticking.  I cannot figure out what has caused it.  It was flawless the first time I burned it.  I want to get it copied over before more issues surface. 

Also, per your earlier comment, I have the orginal files but there are about 15 hours of interviews which I edited down to 2hr 45min mini documentary.  I hope I can figure out what is causing this issue - I cannot imagine reinventing the project.  Very frustrated.
