Hi,

I am not really sure what you mean by background size.  If you are talking about a image that you want to be seen in the background such as a solid color, a jpeg file etc. if you want it to fill the page in the background, it should be the same size as your web page.  Determining the size of the web page really depends on what type of monitor you want it to look the best on such as 4:3 or 16:9 as well as the monitor resolution you want it to look best on VGA, SVGA, etc.

Thanks for your response George. I guess what I'm trying to achieve is a consistent look for anyone viewing my website. Maybe this is an impossible task as I have no idea or control over what display device they might be using. I just wondered if there were any established display protocols that I should be adhering to ?

Hi

This is possible - you need to set the web pages to a fixed width ( say around 960 - 1024px wide) and centred, and set the background parameter width to 100%.

By using the 100% width the pages will be displayed as this forum is - the page content is centred in a 'box'  960px wide, but the background is 100% wide.  The % age width allows the side margins to expand/contract depending on the screen resolution.

I do not have Website Maker installed however this is a general guiding principal for ensuring a consistent display

Hi John. Thanks for your input. I got quite excited as this was exactly the sort of solution I was looking for. Unfortunately, upon checking the background settings box in WM4, there is no option to set background size as a percentage ! I guess I therefore make it larger than is probably necessary and live with the fact that it will appear with scroll bars on most computer screens. Thanks anyway, David.

Hi

. . . .there is no option to set background size as a percentage . . .

Can you post an image of the dialog in question?

If you cannot enter a % value by typing it in the background width box - I would suggest you set the width to 1180px - this will handle most screens with a width greater than this with out producing a horzontal scroll bar.

Hi John.

Hi

Thanks for the image - it shows what I suspected - the page width settings are there, however there appears to be no option for setting how that page is displayed in a browser which is wider than the page setting.

By default the page should be centred on the page (as this forum is).

However this is not guaranteed and hacking the html could be a big job and a nuisance as you would have to do it every time you modify/upload a page.

For the current trend in monitor resolutions see this page  this will aid you in selecting the optimum page width.
