MEP pro premium 2016.  I am in the middle of a slideshow project and I have to keep logging off and on to give the project some get up and go !!!! It is constantly freezing.

Is it good practise to change my settings for movie (E) to automatically create proxy files ? And can I change the settings while I am still working on a project?

Not to be cheeky but.....I have read other posts but....I just need a short and sweet answer in laymans terms.

Hi Pat

. . . . good practise to change my settings for movie (E) to automatically create proxy files . . . .

Only if the project includes HD (720p or 1080p/i) or 4k video and your computer is struggling with playback in the preview monitor or you are using a laptop.

. . . . . I have to keep logging off and on to give the project some get up and go !!!! It is constantly freezing . . . .

Is this on your PC or laptop?

How often?

Check you are not running out of hard drive space.

Hi Pat

I think I did not make it very clear re proxy files - they only are used for video files - if you are working with images only then proxy files are not created / used.

Proxy files are useful when doing complex video editting, collages or Picture in picture (PIP) and I have them turned on by default - however the proxy files do take up a lot of HD space because they are not so compressed as the original video.

. . . . Usually starts acting up when i reach about 20 minutes into my project . . . .

Slowdowns such as this may be caused by several things - I would suggest trying the following:

  • Do a full save regularly - I do mine about every 5 mins or immediately after a complex bit of editting.

  • Make sure no other programs are running unnecessarily eg web browser, news apps, etc.

  • Check how much free hard drive space you have.

Hi Pat,

Did you update to the latest patch? If not, do so and then try again. There have been problems with crashing that hopefully have been fixed in the latest patch.

If you have any effects, they will slow down playback, so you would have to render the range to see playback smoothly. I have a project that I just finished in which I exported parts to mxv files and imported into a separate movie, just so I could see playback smoothly. Of course if I made any changes, they were done to the original, re-exported/imported, until the movie was complete. Then I kept the original version with everything in detail, and a copy with only the mxv files. I used the copy to add chapter markers, multiple movies, and for  exporting and burning. Exporting or burning go a lot faster and smoother. The inconvenience is keeping track of everything and having huge mxv files. Then everything is backed up on a data BD, including all of the mxv files, in case I ever need to go back.

Hi

I am in the middle of a slideshow project and I have to keep logging off and on to give the project some get up and go !!!! It is constantly freezing.

This is usually caused by all the RAM being used up when there are a lot of high resolution stills in the project. What is your OS and how much RAM does your PC have?

There are a couple of settings in Program setting (Y key) that may help:-

1.On the Playback Tab uncheck "Change footage dimensions in high quality"

2. On the Audio/Video Tab check "Reduce Bitmap resolution for preview (improved performance)"

Another tip from Magix is to resize all your JPEG's (stills) to the resolution you intend to export the project in eg. 1920x1080 pixels, in an image editor like Photoshop, prior to import into MEP. This reduces RAM usage whilst editing and helps reduce resizing artifacts in the exported video slideshow.

Also on the top Edit menu frequently click on "Empty Undo and Cache memory" to free up cached RAM.
