Anchoring Text to a Text Bubble

Marc-Bergevin wrote on 12/4/2022, 2:53 PM

Hi. I am trying to create a text bubble that moves across the screen to keep alignment with the subject individual. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to anchor the text within the caption bubble. I was wondering if anyone has successfully done this or can offer some insight on the procedure. Thank-you.

Hi Marc and welcome to the user to user forums.

I'm assuming you have figured out how to get the speech bubble to follow your subject using the Key Frame editor as you are only asking how to keep the text in position within the speech bubble.

I am also assuming you have your speech bubble and text on separate tracks below your selected object (video clip).

In which case click on the speech bubble object on the timeline to highlight and select it. Then right click the object to select the following option.

Selecting Copy video effects should bring up the following text box.

Select continue and then right click on the text object below the bubble object and select paste video effects.

The text should now stay in position within the speech bubble as the bubble tracks the object. (assuming you got the bubble to track the subject first).

I have used VPX 14 to show this procedure but it will be exactly the same in Movie Studio.

Ray.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for getting back to me. I followed your suggestion and the text now move with the caption bubble. However the concept of keyframing is new to me.

My word bubble moves around in close proximity to the subject; I think I influenced the position with the Size/Position/Rotation button.

However the bubble movements are fast and erratic, and I am not sure how to effect more precise control on where the caption bubble moves. It seems to have a differing destination every fraction of a second the movie is played. Appreciate any suggestions on how to slow things downs and smooth out the effect. Thanks. Marc

Hi Ray, I forgot to mention I was using Movie Studio 2023 Suite. I did not see the same keyframe editing window you had available in VPX14. Hopefully this is not an issue. Thanks.

@Marc-Bergevin

Hi Marc.

The Key framing is the same in both programs. It just looks slightly different.

I adjust how my programs 'look' depending on what I am doing so my images don't always look the same as the basic window setup the program comes with in its default mode.

Auto tracking is often not very accurate and to manually adjust the tracking just move the bubble first and place it at regular intervals or where movement speeds up or slows down or moves to a different position within the frame.

To get the key frame editor to start working when you have moved the bubble just a bit the size position rotation effect will appear in the key frame editor. Add the first position by clicking on the +◇ symbol. Then move along the timeline to where you want to add the next key frame and then move the bubble to the next position within the frame. The next key frame is automatically placed in position. Repeat as needed. Then do the copy and paste thing I mentioned in my first post to get the text to follow, assuming you start the process by placing the text within the bubble for the first recorded key frame.

You may want to look at some of the other members tutorials by going to the TUTORIALS section at the top of each forum page and searching out the one on key framing. John CB does a series of such tutorials to help beginners.
