I am not nitpicking, just pointing out that what you said was incorrect as it leads users to think that compositing cannot be done in MMS. You can do compositing in MMS and as defined by the Vegas manual. Even if you add the word "custom," you can't say that MMS can't do it without indicating what you mean by "custom." Ok, that is being pedantic, but still....
MMS has no mask drawing tool and that is a big drawback.
In any event, that all has nothing to do that I can tell with the request by @martin-brennan who seems to just want an overlay type transition, and I showed that in the video.
@browj2 Yep pedanticism, If you'd left it be then that's all it would've been, a comment about fxs suggested that are not suitable to the OP,. In fact it was me who was correcting something that could 'lead users to ...' but you decided to climb on your high horse & cherry pick that sentence taking out of context with the rest of the paragraph.. !
. . . . was hoping it was possible to (say) have a fox's head shape as a transition so that "clip 1" has the fox shape appear central, gradually getting larger to reveal "clip 2" - around 2-3 secs transition time . . . .
Here is my interpretation of your requirement
Timeline for both is:
I use a png image with transparent background, will also work with black/white adjusting the Alpha direction arrow for the correct effect.
There are thousands of free and paid for images on the Internet, get the highest resolution you can to avoid jaggies as the image is zoomed in.

John that's more or less what I'm looking for. I've done still (stencil) transparent transitions, but animated (ie your moving star effect) is really interesting. i don;t suppose you have a walkthru guide for that?
Hi, this is what @johnebaker has done in the star transition above, he says 'I use a png image with transparent background, will also work with black/white', . I used a black/white image, as you can see either work.
I used an image of a woman to show any image can be used & two coloured test images, at the end I swap the two colours for pictures,
Basically you want the transition image going from all black to all white.
