I downloaded the FREE version of Music Maker and am asked for a serial number to activate. How do I activate this program I was not given a serial number?
Where are you asked to activate the edition? You just have the option to activate it, but you not have to do.
EVERY music maker is the same. You just get new instruments, soundpools, functions and presets when you activate a serial number.
by having a Serial number would suggest that you actually purchased Music Maker .
since you didn't buy Music Maker ,....Music Maker will run in "Free Mode" , by default . ( ignore the activation box )
Some of Magix programs , have Trial periods , such as ACID Pro 8 , Samplitude . these programs Do come with a Special Trial Serial Number . "Music Maker Free" does NOT have a Trial period . you can use "Music Maker Free" for as long as you want ,...No serial number needed .

Is the dialog box popping up asking for serial number/activation?
If so you can ignore this, or if you have a previous version of Music Maker installed you can activate the effects, synthesizers and soundpools from that version/edition by entering its serial number in the dialog box, shown.

AFAIK that depends on the feature and the version of MMM they are installed with, some are locked to a specific version of the program or are not compatible with the latest version.
I have also found that MMM 17 (2010) features/soundpools/instruments etc cannot be activated, however later versions of MMM can.
