@CubeAce @Reyfox @johnebaker @Gid @Roberto-Goncalves

I'm a little more optimistic about VPX. In terms of market segment, I see it sitting between MMS and Vegas Pro. Coming from Video Studio and Pinnacle studio, last year I purchased MMS2024, VPX16 and Vegas Pro 22 since Corel/Alludo decided to cease development of their video and photo offerings. I still use these deprecated products on occasion, but I am now focused on Magix software.

I classify MMS as Consumer, VPX as Prosumer and Vegas Pro as Professional and to understand the difference I like to use the analogy of baking a cake. If you like to bake from scratch sourcing and mixing all the different ingredients, having full control, then Vegas Pro is your editor. If you prefer to buy some cake mix from your local supermarket, add an egg and some milk to produce your cake then you will probably go for MMS/VPX.

For anyone contemplating of upgrading from Video Studio, I always recommend MMS. MMS uses the same timeline editing methodology (overlays below the main video) so there is practically no learning curve. Easy!

My recommendation for Pinnacle users is a little more complicated. If the Pinnacle user also edited in Video Studio, then I would recommend VPX. VPX is a hybrid of Video Studio and Pinnacle Studio. It has a Source monitor and Project Folders like Pinnacle and edits like Video Studio. But if the Pinnacle user only edited in Pinnacle, then I would probably recommend Vegas Pro because Pinnacle and Vegas share the same timeline editing methodology (overlays above/over the main video).

There is still hope for VPX yet and I am looking forward to its next incarnation. In development is something called; Modern track concept - The track order can be freely set for each project.

I may be mistaken, but it sounds like the user will have the option to continue editing like MMS/Video Studio or the option to edit like Vegas Pro/Pinnacle. This is not something new, since it already has been implemented in Cyberlink PowerDirector.

If this is the case, I then see a natural progression of video editing skill development from Photostory, MMS, VPX to Vegas Pro with VPX the key software of transitioning users to Vegas Pro.

As for myself, in the past I used two editors based on my requirements. Video Studio was used for quick slideshows and template driven videos while Pinnacle was focused more on pure video. Likewise I see myself using VPX and Vegas Pro in the same manner.

@Can-Dive I personally would love to have an option to edit in reverse of what is now MMS/VPX. It has been the basis of me editing "forever". Powerdirector has that option, especially if someone is coming from Pinnacle Studio or Premiere Elements.

I also see VPX as an editor that can be positioned as an "in between" MMS and VP. But right now, the price is too close to Vegas. Like $10. This is what started my post initially. Seeing how closely they are priced, and if you look at the prospective websites, which would you buy? More "stuff" and features is always a selling point, whether they are useless features you will never use, or even poorly implemented.

Maybe in VPX17 this will happen?

@Reyfox @Gid @johnebaker @Can-Dive

I would love to see a better and solid based version of VPX as it's workflow and implementation is more consumer based and easier to get to grips with than Vegas, but Vegas has always been the 'name' for Magix trying to compete with Adobe since the Magix acquisition of it and my feeling is making VPX more capable with OFX may be a step too far for the company to allow. First they need to get Vegas more compatible with OFX and Boris in particular. Then maybe OFX could be improved to something akin to what Vegas has at present. I also agree the price is too close to Vegas Edit. The people that are not in the main media industries but use Adobe (such as those with smaller budgets having YouTube channels and other media influences) have been leaving due to increasing costs of their annual subscriptions and I think that is the market Magix is trying or at least should be trying to penetrate.

Why I think this is because there is only really one version of Vegas. The second option is just more supplied effects at a probable more affordable way of procuring parts of Boris Effects over having to buy Boris separately.

That would appeal to that segment or the market and a good proportion to target.

This is all speculation on my part but is the main advantage over say Resolve as the alternative.

I don't think that Magix expects Vegas to compete with Premiere, but offer a reasonably priced alternative for those that do not like editing in Resolve (my hand is raised), but do want some advanced editing features. The free version of Resolve is extremely capable for editing.

I think @CubeAce you have a typo in this line?

First they need to get Vegas more compatible with OFX and Boris in particular. Then maybe OFX could be improved to something akin to what Vegas has at present.

I do agree that Adobe has lost some steam with the smaller Youtube/Indie/Event people because of the constant paying forever. A lot of those people have looked at Davinci Resolve, testing the waters with the free version. But at least for me, nodes and different pages just doesn't work. Vegas Pro is/was heavily pirated a few years ago, and still is. They visit the user forum looking for help. You can tell after a while who has legit copies of the software and who don't.

And as of late... the only Boris FX that has been offered is Mocha Vegas with the Vegas Pro Suite version that comes with a ton of additional software and addons. There were too many issues in the past, with Vegas Suite having Boris plugins, but they don't work in the software unless they are of the same year version, removing any other Boris plugin that would be from a previous year. That was the reason I went with Boris Continuum Complete. It was overall, cheaper upgrading each year and you got way more plugins. So that only required me to upgrade with Vegas Edit instead of Vegas Suite.

I'm still advocating that Magix fix the OFX issue with VPX. It doesn't have to be a part of the MMS software. After using various plugins, they become "addictive" (I think that is what they want) and a real time saver in editing.

Fix the website, fix OFX, and possibly offer one with the software so that a user can actually experience using them, and lower the price. Right now, VPX is competing against Vegas, and that is a battle it will not win.

Can-Dive wrote on 3/11/2025, 3:07 AM

@Reyfox

I agree, the pricing for VPX should be lowered to create incentive for MMS users to upgrade. My personal preference is VPX over MMS based on my previous experience with other editors, but I can understand why most MMS users are quite happy with Movie Studio and cannot justify the cost increase for the additional features offered by VPX. In comparison, MMS is offered at a great value for money price.

VPX sits on the same platform of MMS and Photostory. In fact, users can change its Edit Mode from Standard to Minimum which is essentially MMS and then to Basic which is Photostory. So the learning curve for VPX isn't steep because a user can start using VPX with the edit mode they were familiar with and build from there. Therefore, it's really only price which is the hurdle for most MMS users.

Repricing VPX is straight forward and easy to implement. I would suggest pricing VPX between Movie Studio Suite and Ultimate with VPX Ultimate more expensive than Movie Studio Ultimate. I think this will create the incentive for users to migrate from MMS to VPX. As an additional incentive, Magix should offer VPX as an upgrade to MMS users rather than as a new purchase because in reality VPX is MMS with additional features turned on.

Repricing is a solution to increase the sales of VPX but if I was running Magix I would take it one step further and rebrand the entire product line. One issue is that the VPX acronym is too close to Vegas Pro (VP) which may create some confusion in the market. Also, renaming Movie Edit Pro to Movie Studio has been a classic bait and switch disaster for Magix. Even now, the user forum receives queries from individuals who upgraded from Vegas Movie Studio to Magix Movie Studio only to ask why the editing interface is so different? They are told that they purchased a completely different program and should have upgraded to Vegas Pro! A marketing mess!

Here is my proposal. You combine and rebrand Movie Studio and VPX into one product with three different versions. The name of the product is "Metropolis" or "Metro." Since Magix is a German company, the name pays homage to the influence of the German film industry and the 1927 film which is considered one of the great silent films ever made. The different versions of Metro is as follows:

Metro = Movie Studio
Metro Pro = VPX
Metro Pro Suite = VPX with 3rd party plugins plus other Magix products such as Music Maker and/or Sound Forge/Audio Cleaning Lab etc. (hence the Suite)

This rebranding proposal has three benefits. First, it consolidates Magix product lines reducing production and marketing costs. Second, it fixes the branding/marketing error created when Vegas Movie Studio was discontinued. Third, it allows Magix the opportunity to reprice the new brand more appropriately.

No thanks, I'll stick with "Movie Edit Pro" + the current plugins available to it.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@Can-Dive I'm not sure where you're coming from on this, you keep posting 'suggestions of how Magix should move forward but nothing in any of the posts about Magix that have been shared suggest VPX/MMS is going to change. There's marketing, management & financial stuff etc. mentioned, Vegas & a couple of other products are briefly mentioned but not much of anything is written about what is staying & what will go.

I've had Magix for roughly 20yrs, I can't install the MEP10 disc I have but I found a video online

Skipping through that video not much has actually changed, things have moved around, the video fx window that pops up has moved it's controls to the Effects tab.. along with a lot of the other tabs which have been consolidated into Effects & Templates. Other things have changed, there seems to be more right click option now, I'm not sure if these options were available before because like I say I don't have this or old versions to check, but the 'Visuals' tab has effects/templates that MMS no longer has..? I'm pretty sure tracks/objects used to be able to be grouped & using SPR would affect both in unison? So if anything things have been removed.

The Infusion engine was installed a few yrs back, that was a big improvement but also since then not much has changed, a few bugs repaired a couple of times a yr, a couple of acquired AI fxs installed. A forum member has mentioned there's very few bugs but some of those bugs have been around for a long time.

Of course things have changed or have been updated like the UI, but in my minds eye the basics of MMS are the same as the program I bought many yrs ago.

What you're suggesting & to bring it up to date would mean a total rewrite,, that's not going to happen.

@Can-Dive @Reyfox @Gid @AAProds

I'm going to side with Al on this one.

Without looking them up please tell me the new product names for Marathon, Lilt, or Opal Fruits. There are others.

For manufacturers of physical goods it can eventually save money with packaging etc but normally at a drop of sales for a time before consumers get used to the changes. But look at the havoc caused on this forum with MEP changing in name only to MMS.

This page may be of interest to some of you to give some sort of overall picture of the video editing industry. It is so competitive that slip-ups in marketing can be disastrous. A price drop for VPX I think is a good idea but it also needs promotion of more of what it can do. No mention of it's 3D text editor for starters. People may be aware of the set 3D animated texts that can be edited but do they realise once you open such an animated text you could make your own completely different animated text in it, complete with different textures and lighting? Even without full OFX support there is enough in the program to justify an upgrade if that is what is needed. I can't see Magix wanting to make VPX closer in capabilities to Vegas as that would split sales of their Premier Pro product.

Magix has never to my knowledge given accurate figures for users of their products but seems to have hovered around 3.5 million for what seems like ages when you try to look it up and that doesn't even specifically mention video editing so could be a count across the complete range of Magix products.

This may have been before your time but have a guess at what OMO was 😂

Some brands have had new leases of life with a name change such as TUI but not many have been successful.

Personally I like brands that can have their letters anagrammed to spell out what they may be like, such as Vimto.

I clicked on the link above, and looked at Loom, Synthesia, and Techsmith. they really don't compete with any video editor. Video messaging tools, not specifically video editing software. I wouldn't count iMovie either since it is free and included with Mac OS. They even included Avid's Pro Tools, which certainly is not marketed as a video editor.

I don't know what percentage Vegas holds in the market, certainly not as high as Premiere, Resolve, and other competing consumer editors, which cost less.

W all have our ideas of what Magix should consider to bolster their product line. VPX used to be years ago, a lower cost, more professional edit. Now, it seems that it really hasn't found it's place in video editing, and really have no brand recognition outside of Europe, while Vegas Pro does have some brand recognition.

Fixing that generic website would be a good start.

As for brand name changes, do any of you remember Esso? Changed to Exxon, which everyone knows. It took a while, but no one remembers Esso.

Old timers are the ones who are most resistant to change. New people coming, don't know anything before the change. I too am resistant to some change if it interrupts the workflow for me, but anything else, I am good with if it actually improves the software. Movie Edit Pro had different name according to where it was sold. Why, I don't know.

@Reyfox

Hi.

It's easy to find what is used by various Film or large TV broadcasters and often it's more than a couple of editing programs, same as some of us, as one product doesn't often do everything or maybe as well. I know I'm preaching to the converted to an extent. Avid still gets used a lot in post for audio. What I was trying to point out is that no one company has a very large market share in the pro market place. Some visual effects companies use mainly their own software.

I think what I'm trying to get at is whatever the market is for VPX I'm not sure it is that huge for Magix to take more interest in since they acquired Vegas.

As for what we have lost. In VPX at least, the ability to change the efficacy of proxy files that one used to be able to reduce the quality of that I personally found helpful as the track and effects count mounted.

I can also no longer import this type of audio file which I once could.

Both of which I had support with in VPX 12 and MEP 2018 even though Magix said they did not support that audio format.

As for ESSO, the last local garage close to me shut down in 2015. First associated was with paraffin in this country if I remember correctly and called ESSO Blue.

Where was I? Oh yeah,

@Gid

I'm pretty sure tracks/objects used to be able to be grouped & using SPR would affect both in unison?

Yes. That changed in VPX13, I believe, when Magix overhauled Size/Position, combining it with Rotation to get SPR, adding XYZ combinations (XZY, YXZ, YZX, ZXY, ZYX), and adding Anchor Points. As well, you now had to Activate the command, similar to many other effects, in particular, the OFX effects.

This was a major change. I expect that applying the effects in bulk without activating each, was a programming challenge. You can still copy/paste SPR effects from one object to one or more other objects. Just beware of that the use of anchors points and making bulk changes can affect the outcome of certain objects.

If you want to see complete details on how to use SPR and Anchors, you can take a look at my 5 tutorials on SPR. Part 5 covers the various rotation combinations and how they work.

Continuing on, here are the changes from VPX10 through VPX14:

VPX10 to VPX11 (Corresponds to MEP2019, I think)

From the manual:

What's new?

The largest performance improvement in years: Importing a video has been fundamentally redesigned and now offers unprecedented playback performance on CPUS with Intel QuickSync and – for the first time ever – with Nvidia GPUs. New GPU resource management ensure ideal utilization of resources. For the first time, Nvidia GPUs are also support decoding HEVC.

Move object contents: Using the new mouse mode „Move object contents“ (view page 46), you can move the audio or video material "within" an object while keeping the object's position and length the same.

Professional Video Stabilization: The brand-new Video Stabilization (view page 125) offers powerful stabilization and numerous settings for adjusting optimization.

Select, copy, paste and delete tracks: Tracks (view page 49) can now be selected as independent objects, which can be deleted and reordered.

Select a target track: You can now pre-select the destination track (view page 49) for new objects added via the "Import" buttons in the Media Pool (view page 53) or the Insert button (view page 43). New audio and video recordings can also be placed on the target track.

New travel route animations (MAGIX Travel Maps): The newly developed module MAGIX Travel Maps (view page 217) offers many new design possibilities for travel route animations, including custom maps and a huge range of waypoints and vehicles. Small slideshows can be created within the route animation by simply placing photos on the travel path.

New editing mode: Using the new editing mode „Cut and trim“ (view page 46), viewing and cutting large video objects has become much more user-friendly. Move the tool along the timeline and make edits with a simple click using the realtime preview.

New features and presets for dynamic title templates (view page 164): Now, the font, font size and format properties of dynamic title presets can also be customized. An increased number of dynamic presets offer a further design options.

New fonts: Circa 30 new fonts offer even more creative possibilities. In combination with the editing functions of the dynamic title animations, there are completely new creative possibilities for intros, outros and chapter titles.

Redesigned plug-in dialog: The interfaces of the OFX plug-in video effects have been completely redesigned and are now much more user-friendly.

Chapter export: Batch conversion (view page 231) now also allows exporting movie chapters as files.

Rendering with improved Moiré reduction: The improved rendering algorithm results in noticeably fewer Moiré artifacts in exported FullHD movies.

VPX11 to VPX12

From the Manual:

What's new?

• High-DPI program interface for accurate 4k display and Windows display settings over 100%. MAGIX Video Pro X provides razor-sharp display of screen elements such as taskbar, icons and dialog boxes, independently of the monitor's DPI settings. All elements adjust their size in accordance with other desktop elements.

• Redesigned GUI with new, clear icons arranged in a logical display that offers faster access to functions.

INFUSION Engine: New GPU resource management ensures the best utilization of your computer's resources.

• New effect masks in the templates library for creatively combining two different tracks or for cutting sections of an image: Easily create stunning collages by selecting one of a range of layer masks (view page 176) and inserting it into the project between two object that are placed on top of each other.

• New storyboard in basic mode (view page 36): The new storyboard displays all imported images and videos as scenes along with their audio tracks. The scenes are all displayed the same way, irrespective of how long they actually are in the movie. This way, the new storyboard perfectly matches the fresh new look of MAGIX Video Pro X.

• Redesigned transition menu: View all transition and settings options within a single, clear context menu.

• Redesigned start dialog (view page 267) with new templates for your movie settings. Select a video format (e.g. HD, UHD or social media) to see a number of preset options for resolution. You can then choose frame rate separately.

• Social media templates for portrait videos and square video images for Instagram, Facebook and other platforms can now be accessed in the new start dialog (view page 267) or under "File > Settings > Movie...".

VPX12 to VPX13

From the Manual:

What's new?

INFUSION Engine 3: Video Pro X13 now lets users experience a seamless GPU workflow for all current graphics cards by Intel, NVIDIA and AMD. In addition to the high performance playback, the INFUSION Engine 3 now also brings a powerful export of the formats AVC and HEVC to graphics cards of all major manufacturers.

■ Multi GPU Support: In Video Pro X13, each graphics card can be assigned a task. Playback, effect calculation, export - Each engine stage can be accelerated by a graphics card of your choice.

■ Panorama storyboard with audio editing: Large thumbnails make the subject of your video appear in the center of the screen and help you keep a clear overview even of more complex projects. As a highlight, the Panorama Storyboard now offers a new type of audio workflow. An easy-to-understand visualization of the audio objects in the correct temporal relation to the video allows for exact audio editing already in the storyboard.

■ Improved handles including anchor point: With the new handles in the video monitor, objects can be positioned and scaled effortlessly. In addition, the new anchor point offers the possibility to define the center point of rotations. This opens up a huge range of new animation possibilities with Video Pro X 13.

VPX13 to VPX14

From the manual:

What's new?

@browj2 Your list basically embellishes most of what I mentioned, there's very few 'new features' there.,

The UI change I mentioned,

Online/hub speech to text etc. these I didn't mention because they're outside the main program.

Some acquired plugins NB, Boris & AI FX's (mentioned) + Travelmaps which is a plugin of sorts.

The Chroma key 'redesigned ', nothing really changed apart from the Water option was lost.

Objectselection in preview monitor is a good one but zooming still requires the press of the Ctrl key.

---------

NEW SINCE MAY 2022 Vertical video Import and edit vertical recordings from your smartphone and easily create videos for social media

This is a bit late to the party, 2022! really, ffs 9:16 has been around for a long time but even then it doesn't recognise 'vertical recordings' AR when dragged in. 🤦‍♂️

---------

+ Some codec additions or upgrades that are needed to keep the software working,

What I'm saying is that the base program has seen very little change over the yrs.

Edit - you added another comment while I was writing, I never said there has never been any change but I'm not going to go into a list of things that are expected of a program's progression through the yrs, mentions plugins again & overall airs on the side of hyperbolic, no offense.

@browj2 yes, the Exxon Valdez is Exxon/Esso. I even worked at an Esso gas station in my formative years.

I know that when I am asked what I would like to see in software for a new version, is that the previous version have as many bug fixes as possible. I know that doesn't sell software. Having "AI" anything does. Having a "one click does all" sells too. But I also know that some things can not be fixed without a complete re-write of the software, which isn't going to happen in the "here and now".

You've always wrote about the integration of Magix software, which is lacking. It could sell more than one product if there was integration. But I also wonder if, like what @Can-Dive wrote, if there were only one version with various unlocks as you upgraded, would that work. You would be able to demo and see if it works for you and would be worth paying the unlock price to remove maybe that huge red "X" on the screen..

@Gid, that brings back memories of long ago. I know in the States, Esso became Exxon. Then they "merged" with Mobil and became Exxon/Mobil. As you know, we in the States think that the universe revolves around us... so I am surprised the Esso name is still out there.

Gid wrote on 3/11/2025, 1:07 PM

@Reyfox

But I also know that some things can not be fixed without a complete re-write of the software, which isn't going to happen in the "here and now".

That's basically what I'm saying, there's been some changes to keep the software running but I suspect the program is what it is & moving it forward or making major changes just isn't possible with the way it works at a base level.

When I google 'Mobil petrol station Leeds UK' . Tesco Esso comes up, Tesco is a supermarket that also has petrol stations, but Mobil is very familiar to me, I'm not sure why, where I see it, maybe on fuel tankers (trucks) or maybe on a sign somewhere... I'm going to be looking out for that f*ker now all the time... 🧐

Yep I've been addicted to watching YT videos of tariffs & the orange man, it's prob like The Gulf of Mexico, . 'Only in America' ..., We shouldn't discuss politics on here so I'll say no more.

@Gid @Reyfox

Main Mobil products I see are engine oils in places like Halfords. ESSO here was taken over by ASDA.

Looking on the internet there are still 300 ESSO petrol stations in the UK mainly owned by Tesco. BP has agreements with ESSO to provide fuel and use it's fleet cards at ESSO stations.

I think OFX could be implemented better in VPX, I just don't see Magix being interested in doing so. I do like the idea of a tiered VPX but think there would only be two versions of the base program but that probably won't happen either due to the need for the 'base' MMS.

All this is speculation anyway.

What would it take for someone here to really consider the next iteration of VPX?

OFX and flipping the way it edits. It would be great having the same plugins working the same in my editing software.

Hi Everyone

Gas/petrol stations are definitely OT 😂.

Interesting fact - you will find fuel tankers from many different 'brands' loading fuel at the same refinery.

@Gid

That's basically what I'm saying, there's been some changes to keep the software running but I suspect the program is what it is & moving it forward or making major changes just isn't possible with the way it works at a base level.

Why is that different to almost every other program out there? Outlook has had changes but is still a confusing dog's breakfast like it always was. Word the same. Acrobat the same. They all have been tarted-up and been tinkered-with but the basics haven't changed in all of them.

Have you ever considered that MEP hit the spot, and doesn't need to fundamentally change? I tried Vegas years ago and spat it out quick time.

For someone who by his own admission hardly uses Magix, you're being pretty vocal against it here.

For me, MEP does a great job for what I want. Yes, it has improved a lot. It's got bugs which I'd like fixed and which I have/am conversing with Magix about; I don't just criticise on here.

Sometimes I think, gid, that you overdo the criticism of Magix and the promotion of Vegas.

@AAProds

 Perhaps you should have tried to learn Vegas instead of spitting it out like a child, then you would have a clue what you're talking about & not have such an uneducated personal dislike for it. If you have an issue with me mentioning Vegas that's your problem.

No MEP/MMS didn't hit the spot, maybe it just reached it's peak, It may have hit the spot for you but in general if it did hit the spot why don't my Boris plugins work very well & why would people like myself move away from it, that's rhetorical as you admit you're ignorant of Vegas esp the latest versions so wouldn't know how to answer that.

You've made only one previous comment in this thread, 'No thanks, I'll stick with "Movie Edit Pro". Did you read this whole post, do you know what we're discussing (yakking about)? Unless you can't read, I wrote 'it is what it is', ie. it does it's job & 'making major changes'. In other words changing it or adding new features might not be possible because of the way it's written & laid out, but none of us are software engineers so we don't know the full in n outs of it workings & mentioning what is possible in other editors are not criticisms they're just facts, This is what is being discussed & not that there's something actually wrong with the base core program. If you'd read between the lines you'd have seen that. .

Nobody forced you to join this conversation. This has been a friendly discussion so take that defensive chip of your shoulder, stop cherry picking comments & stop making personal attacks!

Also unless you have a memory problem I've written more than once on this forum that I've had MMS for 20yrs, (I've been on this forum many more yrs than my profile says), I've 400+ videos on YT, the majority of which were made with MMS & I've made quite a few for other people. I also bought a friend of mine MMS last yr saying it was a good basic editor & that it will 'do what he wants'.
