VPX crashes when importing mp4 to timeline.

tucsondave wrote on 4/6/2017, 10:16 AM

VPX has recently started crashing when I drag an mp4 or MOV video to the timeline. They play fine in the preview window.

Other video formats import fine. Mp4's and MOV's were working fine a month ago.

Windows 10 Home 64 bit, v 1607. Last update on 3-29-17.

Intel I5

VPX v. 15.0.3.144 (UDP3) UG code 8424 KA3

Hi,

I have the same version of VPX and can import and use mp4 files without problem so there is nothing inherently wrong with VPX, I think!

However, mp4 is a container, with a variety of different formats possible within the same extension. I suggest you do two things:

  1. Download the free MediaInfo utility (if you don't already have it), point it to one of the problem files and copy and paste to this thread the details in the "Tree" view. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
  2. Attach a short section of one of those files to a future post and let others attempt to open it and see what results they achieve.

Your mention that you also cannot play .mov files suggests a possible problem with Quicktime on your computer. I know the advice often is to use something like Movavi Video Convertor to convert mov files to a different format, and so avoid installing and using QuickTime; personally I have QT installed on my computer without problem.

Hi

Apologies for correcting this Jeff.

. . . . Attach a short section of one of those files to a future post and let others attempt to open it and see what results they achieve. . . . .

@ david-hamory

Please use a file sharing site such as Dropbox to upload an original file to - uploading to the forum, Youtube, Vimeo etc will convert/change the video file which may fix the issue so we will not be using the same file as you replicate the problem.

VPX does not need Quicktime installed to import MOV files, however if you want to export as MOV then you will need Quicktime installing, however mp4 video files are the preferred format for near universal playback.

Thanks, but as I said these files worked fine a month ago. I thinking maybe that program that came with VPX, "PC Check and Tuning" which I tried may have eliminated some file that VPX needs. I have reset VPX . Also reinstalled from website and disk with no change.

I have run Window sfc which reports no damaged system files.

@John EB,

Apologies for correcting this Jeff.

Absolutely no apology needed! I'd forgotten the forum's "tendency" to convert files!

@tucsondave

Unless you're willing to post a file we have no means of helping you to check what the problem might be. I know you said they "worked fine a month ago" but in that month all sorts of things could have changed on your computer, especailly Windows updates! Personally, I doubt that "PC Check and Tuning" could or would be the cause.

I have a dashcam program that I discovered would not load its own MOV files. Also re-installed Movie Edit Pro 15 and it too would not import MP4 or MOV video.

Decided to re-install Windows 10. Three hours later all is well. I have no clue as to what file in Windows was missing or corrupted.

Thanks for the suggestions.
