I've downloaded the trial version of VPX 7 to see if it is able to handle AVC format correctly but the program says it is unable to read / write the format.

IIRC there have been many issues with Handbrake conversions to h.264 format.
If the converted files have a .mp4 file extension - try changing it, using Windows Explorer, to .MOV and then importing into VPX again - you will need Quicktime installing if you do not have it

That did the trick. Giving it the quicktime extension "fooled" VPX 7 and now I can play with it finally :D
