My product is Movie studio 2023 Platinum
I have upgraded from Movie edit pro, and am extremely happy with the speed increase in operation.
However when i try to use the Effects/Vegas video stabilisation nothing happens.No visual indication anything is happening.and on checking no stabilisation has occured.
An answer will be appreciated
Hi Danny and welcome to the user to user forums.
First question. What have you upgraded from ? Program, version, etc.
Second question. Did image stabilization work OK for you on your previous editor?
Last question. What are you trying to achieve?
I ask the last question because image stabilization only tries to stop the background within the frame from moving, not the foreground. That is a different problem with an entirely different approach to curing it so if you are trying to stabilize a face for instance that is much closer to the camera than the background, post processing image stabilization will not work.
While the basic one provided is not the best at this function it should show signs of working and there should be an analyze button which once pressed should produce a short pause with maybe a progress bar showing somewhere.
To demonstrate my point please look at the two videos below.
Notice how the background steadies down on the right hand side compared to the left side.
Now applying the version you have, not as powerful, but working.

An obvious and probably stupid question butyou are clicking ao "apply effect"?
If it's working you should see this - shown with and without zoom. The stabilisation is obvious without the zoom.

I've never read anything about Mercalli (or any stabiliser, for that matter) that suggests it has the ability to stabilise only a portion of a video. I assume that if a head is bouncing around with a stable background, it will still try to stabilise the screen as a whole because it hasn't been told to ignore the "background" and stabilise only a designated , bouncy area. Looking at the way these stabilisers work, by zooming in and simply and thousands of keyframes (effectively) to move the whole image to keep it steady, it would be impossible to do what you are suggesting, because part of the image (the head) would have to be moved in relation to the rest of the video, leaving black holes.
In my experience, Vegas Stab is ineffective, and I was quite surprised, after finishing droolling at Andy's car, that it worked so well in that case.

There are large differences between Andy's and my video clips. My face is much closer to the camera and the background much further away as a proportion of distance. With the basic Vegas effect there are no options to adjust for the amount of zoom to be used or strength or directions the effect has to calculate. With such limitations, depending on what the application has to deal with will give varying results. Mainly you feel this Vegas version is not working if trying to stabilize something close to camera with a background further away. We have gone through all of this before a long time ago.

Ray, I still disagree. IMO, Vegas Stab is just not as good as Mercalli. As for:

nor are there any options in Mercalli to select "directions" for the stabilisation to calculate. Re zoom limits, Vegas obviously has pretty big limits going the edges being displayed by Andy's video (as big as I've ever seen in Mercalli, BTW); it just doesn't do it very well. Either program can simply not prioritise an area hat is much closer than a background (such as a head).
It would have been better if your comparison video showed the full frames of each run; as it is, each side by side frame is different. For example, we can't see the relative stability of the reel to reel. No ned to do a re-run; just pointing out the ideal comparison setup.

From what I recall about Mercalli as the difference between v2 and newer, like v5, the zoom factor is adjusted depending on the requirement for not having any black areas along the way. This is automatic. For earlier versions, the zoom factor was calculated and static for the worst case for the entire clip.
Does Vegas Stab do this?

Did you purchase recently? If so, you should have gotten Mercalli V6 plugin which is far superior to the Vegas Stabilizer. Do you have Mercalli?

Vegas stabilisation is very aggressive on the zoom in when it comes to stabilising - I suspect that this is 'worst case' zooming.

Hi guys thanks for your help,much appreciated.
John my cheaper version does not include Mercalli I am using 3D distortion to straighten any errors and lots of key frames on video to stabilise. The results are brilliant but requires quite a lot of patience. A snapshots ot tv in my room that I often film from but not using a tripod,still photo to show what I mean,exaggerated. Tv only no room visible. Sorry erased the video version showing all the key frames but the sequence is the same principle.

I just updated from Movie Studio 2020 to 2024 Platinum, and now don't have the Mercalli or the Magix stabilization plugins, which I was using in projects. John CB mentioned that Mercalli should be included in the newest version, but I can't find it...
"Magix" stabilization is now called "Vegas video stabilisation" and can be found under Effects>Video Effects.
Mercalli is no longer available I believe with the current offer for Movie Studio 2024 Platinum. I suspect the version you had previously, presumably version 5, was part of MS 2020 (hence, licensed to that version) and so is no longer accessible to you, sorry.
The current release of Mercalli is version 6, which a number of us were fortunate to be able to obtain under a more recent release of either Movie Studio or Video Pro X (and it seems to be a perpetual licence).

Mercalli V6 (permanent licence) is still available with MMS 2024 Ultimate until the end of the month (26th). Pricy but with lots of additional effects of which only ProDad Hide has a limited one year licence.
If you have only just bought your version within the last two weeks write to Magix at infoservice@magix.net and ask if you can swap programs and pay the difference (If you want to). They are normally more than happy to do so.
