@johnebaker

Hi John.

An indicator of this may be how long the preview processing/caching bar takes to get to 100% before playback actually starts.

That only ever happens to me when I change the audio buffer or sample amounts and makes no difference.

Even with a 30 second titling project with eight tracks of blended Chroma Key with no sound I'm having trouble. That is still a breeze to do in MEP 2020. There I can't move any object without endless waiting.

Ray.

Hi,

I have not installed the latest patch. My Update Service expired just before.

I had similar trouble with VPX hanging for 15-20 seconds on a couple of occasions on two separate days, IIRC. I was going to complain but the problem went away and has not returned. As best I can figure, I had some files that were screen captures that VPX did not like - some it did, some it didn't. Even having them in the folder showing in the Media Pool seemed to be causing a slowdown. I have since replaced them with files run through Handbrake and moved the originals to a subfolder that VPX doesn't see.

I have also had a slowdown problem with some Magix effects with video that use a different frame rate than I do. When I encounter these, I transform the Magix video to 29.97, replacing the original - problem gone.

I have, on occasion, had slowdown problems with Travel Maps files. Transformed to 29.97, problem gone. Lately, though, I have not encountered any problems.

So, for the last month, I have not had problems with either VPX14 or MS2023. I have been making some tutorials using MS2023 as the base, and doing the editing of the captured files in VPX14. I have mostly SPR effects.

@CubeAce

Ray, you may want to look at the source files that you're using and even files in folders that show up in the Media Pool to see if there are any that VPX14 does not like. Also, try to isolate any effects that may cause problems. There is a conflict somewhere with your setup or material that I don't have.

Hi John.

All my source files have only ever come from one of three sources. My camera/s MP4 or mov. files. OBS, which is using settings I have been using for the best part of three years now and not normally for normal projects but just for editing screen work. I don't use many files from my camera that produces the mov files. In fact only three of my videos have any footage from it. I use Boris effects stand alone Partial Illusion, set to produce standard MP4 files at either 50 or 25 fps (same as my camera shooting) and that's it. I've never had to use handbrake or any other similar program. Even on the odd occasion I shoot time-lapse or motion lapse, the software I use is supplied by the manufacturer and I've never had problems. You have seen my odd Media Info postings of my own files. They don't vary much. Nor do my export settings.

I suppose the videos that come from the external effects like Hide, Etc. are another variable but I have only used one or two of them once for the sake of just using them. Most of their claims are over rated as well. Re-Speeder is good though. Again only used about twice. The Supplied one within the editor is normally good enough.

I still tinker with my trial version of Neat Video in the hope that I will eventually get to improve some of my low light stuff but so far success alludes me. I don't do much actual post processing at all. 99% of what anyone sees is as I shot it, except for re-sizing, blending and occasional Gamma correction. I don't even sharpen or colour correct most of the time. Most of the rest I do is generated by the program or the supplied freebie third party effects.

Hi,

I just recalled another intermittent problem. I use 2 screens, one, 4K) with the monitors and PTF, the other (Full HD) with the Timeline and Media Pool. Playback was often poor, but not if I went to the default with everything on the FHD monitor. I say intermittent because VPX14 seems to playback better on my 4K, seems to...I'll have to watch more carefully and use more effects.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

OBS - there is probably the problem.

My screen recordings were fine in VPX13, IIRC, but went haywire in 14.

No Magix tech support yet!

@johnebaker  On Nov 22, as you advised, I submitted my support request to Magix by completing the form on their website. Immediately, I received an auto-response email with this ticket number: Removed by Moderator, but the email body was blank.

After waiting a few days, I replied on Nov 27, restating all my inquiry details within my email. This time, I received an auto-reply that actually contained some text in the body.

But so far, I have not yet received any correspondence from an actual human. 8 days have now elapsed since my original support request. What do you think I should do?

For reference, I have pasted my original support request below.

@johnebaker

As you advised, I have submitted a support request to Magix, as follows:

For the past 8 months, VPX has been malfunctioning so much that it is barely usable. Can you please help me fix this problem?

When I try to move or resize a jpg image, or when I try to color text, Video Pro X freezes for 20 seconds, or often much longer.

Sometimes, I can move a clip without any lag, but that is rare. If I deselect a clip after moving it, and then reselect it and try to move it, there is always a lag.

Generally, I make quite simple HD videos, 1920 x 1080. I have no trouble with audio or video playback.

The problem started in March 2022. At the time, the only recent change I had made to my computer was to install the monthly Windows updates, as required by Microsoft.

To solve the problem, I have taken the following steps, none of which have made any difference:

  • I upgraded from VPX 10 to VPX 14.
  • I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
  • I upgraded my graphics card from Asus ROG GTX 1070 to EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3: 12G
  • I updated the RTX 3080 drivers.
  • I upgraded to windows 11 version 22H2.
  • I tried running VPX 14 as admin.
  • I disabled SecurityHealthSystray.exe in Windows Task Manager / Startup, and then rebooted.
  • I rebooted Windows with msconfig / Diagnostic Startup.
  • I uninstalled and reinstalled VPX 14.
  • I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth successfully.
  • I ran sfc /scannow successfully.
  • I installed the following Windows updates: KB5019980, KB5020622, KB5017271
  • I re-installed the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables.

Davinci Resolve and Cubase Pro 12 both work very well on my computer. I have no trouble with any other software. My antivirus software is Windows Defender.

I am using the following software and hardware:

  • Video Pro X14 version 20.0.3.175
  • OS: Windows 11 version 22h2
  • Graphics card: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3
  • USB Audio interface: RME Fireface UCX
  • Asus X299 motherboard
  • Intel i7-9800x Skylake processor,
  • 64 GB RAM Kingston HyperX
  • Corsair Pro 850 watt power supply
  • Dell UHD monitor
  • Wired Kensington trackball mouse
  • The program and data are on separate SSD Drives.

Hi.

I'm not sure how we are supposed to reply to this. Is eight days excessive for a reply from Magix?

Based on my own previous experiences I would say yes but at this time of year with staff illnesses a possibility I'm not sure. In the past my replies from Magix have come in at around four days.

I have been looking at your system specs more closely though as I originally said I was surprised you were having more problems than me and you were running a nvidia 3080.

However, after really looking at your system specs there are differences between my setup and yours that may be causing you additional problems.

The main one is you have a 4K display. Even though you may only be editing HD content and outputting to HD resolutions your program is running to produce a 4K image of the program on your monitor. That's a larger load on your system to mine and there can be re-scaling problems that are associated with that. Have you looked at how to set the program up to use a 4K display here.

Try that alteration if you haven't already and see if there is any improvement.

The other problem could be two fold. Your processor dos not have an inboard Intel graphics chip and as Jeff pointed out earlier, some of the programs functions depend on that for a smoother running output. Also even though you have memory rated at 3200Mhz,your processor can only use it at a maximum of 2666Mhz and is probably running it slightly below that. I made the same mistake, not realising that just because I had higher speed ram that it would not be used at its maximum speed. Intel i7 processors actually can use the higher speed ram better than i9 processors.

If you have the Asus AI Suite 3 running on your system you can check what speed your system ram is actually running at. Mine is stuck at 2133Mhz.

Also I'm seeing that with every subsequent Windows update both my copy of VPX 14 and now MEP 2022 is suffering more but in this instance it is the audio where I'm having to increase both buffer and sampling sizes to avoid not an actual stutter of the audio now but more of a background thrumming noise that seems to come and go. Sometimes because I've added an effect or audio track but at other times there seems no reason at all.

I don't think this is purely a Magix programming problem as this problem seems to be evolving with Windows update patches but this needed increase in audio buffers is worrying me at least. If others like John Baker and John brown are not suffering this then I am still suspecting that Windows is being tuned to run the newer processors more efficiently at the cost of older processors but that is a guess on my part.

Last but least, when raising a ticket to magix please stick to the facts only in regard to your problems with the product in question. Giving examples of programs not being effected is completely irrelevant and possibly insulting to the developers. I think you will find them more sympathetic if you don't try to compare their product with other products.

Having said all of this, the fact that on my system at least (hence my sympathy with your own problems) seems to be linked heavily with the Windows updates vs my system specs is now effecting software that was earlier running fine is very worrying as Windows 10 support finishes on the 23rd Dec, and I have the feeling that upgrading to Win 11 will not make anything easier running the older version of MEP.

Ray.

That includes the weekend - Magix office hours are Mon - Fri.

Given the complexity of the issue in determining a fault it must be reproducible, which can take some time.

Another user, @willshoe has posted a solution, which worked for them, with Music Maker lagging.

Check in the Windows 11 settings that Text Cursor option is off -

Great work John.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
