Using the cut tool while the cursor or movie is playing

Kirk-Johnson wrote on 2/15/2024, 5:15 AM

The 2023 version of this program was able to cut or edit on the fly while the
movie was in motion. This greatly sped up editing. Using the latest version, when
I hit the spacebar to play the movie in the edit screen, the cut tool greys out
and I have to hit the space bar to stop it to then make a cut. Is there a way to
turn this feature back on or do I need to go back to using an older program?

If anyone has experience with other programs that have this feature, could you point me in the right direction? I have been using Magix for the last 10+ years and really dont want to change but may have to...

AFAIK has never been possible any Magix Movie Studio version from 2018 to the current version, nor in it its predecessor Movie Edit Pro.

This is MMS 2023, I also checked MEP 2016 and MMS 2024

However this was possible in Vegas Movie Studio 17 and earlier, now discontinued, and was replaced by the Magix version based on Movie Edit Pro.

John, 2021 and 2023 both do it, but only once. You then have to stop-start the Play marker or move it with the mouse to reactivate the "cut on the fly".

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. Hi,

I tried in MEP2015 Premium and it didn't cut there either.

Out of curiosity, why would you do this?

Cutting would just place a cut, not trim. And I don't see how you could trim while playing back. Even just placing a cut would tax my brain. By the time I decided to cut and transmitted the command to my finger, it would be too late.

If you just want a marker where you could come back to, Ctrl+P, (snap marker) works during playback.

Are you aware of the Split&Trim tool (Shift+T)? With this, you just scrub along the timeline but over an object and click to put a cut or hold down and drag to trim. You seen the frame that you are at in the preview monitor. You can go back and forth with the mouse button held down to adjust the trim point. This would be a lot faster than putting cuts during playback and can be very precise. Just don't forget to switch back to normal mouse mode when done.

I do this on my rough edits. I have learned my voice profile and can edit things like um or ah out on the fly. When I need to close edit I slow things down a bit. I did not ever own any version of Vegas and am hoping one of the versions will still do this. It is hard to teach an old dog a new trick but I am trying..

browj2 wrote on 2/15/2024, 12:23 PM

@Kirk-Johnson

Hi,

Give Split&Trim a try. It takes a bit of practice. Turn on audio scrubbing. You can drag the playback marker along the timeline and hear the playback, and when you need to trim something out, just go over the object, left mouse button down to start the split and drag. Then, back to dragging the playback marker.

Hi Marc,

Good one! Except that scrubbing has to be turned off. If scrubbing is on (either 1 frame or long), the shortcuts won't work.

@Kirk-Johnson

Hi Kirk,

As per the video, use the right hand scrubbing slider. Scrubbing must be off so you won't be able to hear the audio which is what I think that you also want.

Thus, use Split & Trim while playing back with audio - just click at the right spot.

Hi

As I understand the process being used in the linked to post, the method is quite simple and technically is not doing the cuts while the video is playing.

Method: Hold down the right or left arrow key for the desired direction of playback, press the T key where you want to make a cut, you can use the Z and U keys however this adds complexity.

Scrubbing needs to be turned on if you need to hear the audio.

The reason this works is that the keyboard generates interrupts every time a key is pressed or held down which Windows services and performs the appropriate actions.

Had more of a play and No, it doesn't cut at the current movie position, in any version, as described in post #1.

When you hit Play, the Play marker doesn't actually move, and if you hit T or "Cut", a cut is made at the Play marker position, not the current position.

@johnebaker John you didn't get a cut because your Play marker is at Zero.

Hi Al,

you didn't get a cut because your Play marker is at Zero.

I tried with the playback marker part way along the timeline and T does nothing during playback. But T works if I hold down the right arrow or the shuttle slider. The split is at the location of the playback marker when I hit T.

What playback behaviour are you using? I have it checked "Spacebar stops at current playback position."

The first cut was around the 1 sec mark on the timeline followed by several more.

Below is a better example - the first mouse click is at 3 secs mark on the timeline, a left mouse click is when the Yellow circle changes to a smaller blue one. I also included the Arrow key + T key method

John, I understand that, but your Play marker is still at Zero. The cut will occur at the Play marker, not where the movie is. Move your Play marker along a bit, hit the space bar to star playing, then hit T (or click Cut). A cut is made at the new Play marker position.

Which is, of course, not really achieving what @Kirk-Johnson wants to occur, as far as I can interpret. He wants the cut to occur at the current movie point.

John, got it, I was just addressing JohnEB's issue.

I never use this sort of feature but we still don't know exactly what step @Kirk-Johnson was taking to achieve his "on the fly" cuts in older versions of the program, because it appears that merely hitting the space bar to start playing and then hitting T to cut at the current time-point has never worked in any version.

@AAProds

Hi Al

. . . . Play marker is still at Zero . . . .

Aha - you mean the Playback start position marker.

I can get the single cut while playing if I turn off Spacebar stops at current playback position, however there is an issue between where the cut is made and the time the T key is pressed while playing.

MMS 2023

MMS 2024 does not behave as 2023, ie no cut.

@browj2

To answer your question I set up a mouse shortcut to use cut/split with one of the buttons. I would hit the spacebar to set the movie in motion and would press the mouse button while the movie was playing to cut where I wanted. The scissors icon was not greyed out in older versions allowing this to happen. I got very used to using it and now I REALLY miss it! I am using Studio Suite 2024. I may have to try Vegas and spend the big bucks if it works on that.. I will free trial it first though. I was really hoping for a work around. I wrote to CS and they acknowledged that it did indeed work on previous versions and they dont know why they removed it. Maybe if more of us ask for this time saving feature things will change in our updates.

Hi

. . . . I set up a mouse shortcut to use cut/split with one of the buttons . . . .

Did you set this up to send the character t - if not, what command is it sending?

Tested both with my Contour Shuttle and Logitech Marble mouse - both send the 't' keystroke, however no still no cuts while playing, only works when holding down the right arrow key.

Tested in MEP 2014, 2015, 2016, 2023 and 2024 - still the same as in my post 2 above this one.

@Kirk-Johnson

Hi,

Under the cut menu I used split scene

The question from @johnebaker was which command are you using for the mouse?

Did you try the other methods - like Split & Trim?

Or holding down the right arrow key to play instead of the spacebar?

As you have seen from the posts, unless I am mistaken, none of us has been able to use the spacebar for playback with audio and use the Split (T) command in any version going back to MEP2014. So you must have been doing something else, but what?

Hi

The keyboard shortcut for that is t is this what your mouse is sending?

To check open Notepad and click the mouse button to see if this is what is being sent.

Can you post a screenshot of the mouse setting please.

My Logitech mouse has a Cut option however that is not the same as sending 't' which is the keyboard shortcut used in MMS.

This is what happens when set to 'Cut'

As you can see, the video file disappears as the 'Cut' programmed button is sending the code equivalent to Ctrl+X - ie the Cut option of Cut, Copy and Paste

The same occurs when using the arrow keys to move through the video.
