Upgraded to Windows 10 - lots of problems

browj2 wrote on 6/29/2016, 10:56 PM

I can sympathize a bit with those who have gone through the process and had to reinstall one or two Magix programs. I say a bit because I have many Magix programs and many versions and my problems are many.

I upgraded to W10 today after backing up everything, disk image, Acronis system backup, etc. Prior to that, I removed several older Magix programs, including a few versions of MusicMaker, Music Studio, MEP, Xara 9 32 & 64 bit versions.  Now for some surprises.

Appeared to work:

  • VPX7
  • VPX(8)
  • MEP2015 Premium
  • MEP2016 Premium
  • MusicMaker 2016 Live (Premium build)
  • Samplitude Music Studio 2015
  • Audio & Music Lab Premium (2016 subscription version)

Didn't work at all:

  • Samplitude Pro X2 - big surprise
  • Xara Designer Pro 11 (32 & 64 bit versions) - I deactviated before upgrading to W10 as was recommended by Xara, to no avail.) - big surprise
  • PhotoManager 12 (no surprise)
  • VPX6 - surprise
  • PhotoStory on DVD 2013 Deluxe (no surprise)
  • MP3 Deluxe MX (no surprise)

Problems and surprises:

  1. In the movie editors that worked, each asked to activate the CODEC for MP4. Worked before and I am definitely not paying for this.
  2. Two instruments that I downloaded and paid for recently need to be activated but my Activation codes don't work.
  3. Some other instruments that worked and that came with some of the versions of MusicStudio are asking for Activation.
  4. Century Piano no longer works, needs activation or something. It came with one of the early versons of MM that I uninstalled.
  5. VariVerb II is not working and Activate VariVerb/Buy VariVerb shows up when clicking on the preset list. Clicking on Activate does nothing.

 Other problems

  1. emityrevE I start to type a new line here, it types in backwards. W10 is dyslexic friendly.
  2. Permanently uninstalling some programs means that some features, in particular some third party plugins will also be uninstalled. This happened to me with Xara - AV Bros Page curl disappeared. If I remove some of the more recent MEPS, like 2015 and VPX6 and VPX7, I will lose the third party plugins that came with those but that also work in the most recent version.

As I see it, this is a major undertaking of unninstalling and reinstalling a dozen programs with all additions. Right now, I am not a happy camper.

The one thing that really is annoying is the MP4 activation. This should not be happening. Even Pinnacle Studio Pro 18.6 Ult worked and did not ask for MP4 activation again.

Do I have to reinstall everything, including VPX(8) just to get the MP4 to work? And everything else?

Hi John CB

It is not just Magix programs that are affected.

My Paintshop Pro X7 has been affected in that it is now regularly nagging me to upgrade, despite setting the 'Never show again option' in the dialog, before the upgrade it behaved impeccably and respected my wish not to upgrade.

I had to re-install Visual Studio 2015 and repair Office 2016 - you would have thought MS would at least get their own programs right.

For the Magix programs you can try running steps 3 - 11 in my tutorial and then try repairing the installations.

I would recommend a full re-install of the affected programs - if you do this, remove all affected programs in steps 1 and 2 run steps 3 - 11 and in step 12 re-install in the correct order ie older version first if you have several versions of a program.

. . . .  The one thing that really is annoying is the MP4 activation. This should not be happening . . . .

That is one of the most common issues along with program activation and loss of burner recognition when upgrading to Windows 10 - full re-install fixes this providing you install in the order as above.

As for your dyslexic keyboard - that sounds like either

  • a corrupt or mismatched driver issue - running the Syscheck in my tutorial should fix this.

    or

  • a second RTL language is installed and somehow you switched the keyboard to that layout while keeping the current language.

Hi John,

Thanks for the recommendation. I am uninstalling everything, but ran into a problem using REVO Uninstaller. After uninstalling Samplitude MS 2015, the icons for all Magix programs changed to a generic icon. Trying to uninstall somethings brings up a message, "Running the application's uninstaller failed! Possible invalid uninstall command!" Continuing brings up the registry cleaner part so I stop, run the application install program, repair, and then the icon for the main program comes back and I can uninstall correctly.

I have kept all of the install programs but usually when installing some Magix programs, the download is a small file and upon running it, a large file is downloaded. I presume that the large file is downloaded into a temp folder somewhere and then deleted. To reinstall, I have to download the large file again.

Is there any way to keep the large download?

EDIT: I think that I found them watching Search Everything whilst downloading. As well, I noted that I do indeed have most of the large install files.

I also noticed that REVO presents files under my Soundpools folders to be removed. Glad I caught that. Have to be careful to not uninstall too much.

Thanks,

Hi John

That is one of the issues using third party uninstallers - they can be over aggressive, locating every registry entry / program ini/config file that contains links to a file/folder for that program and wants to remove it.

Conversely the Windows uninstaller cannot remove items which the program creates at first run after installation.

Cheers

Update: Reinstalled programs

MEP2016 Premium and VPX(8)

I was worried about the plugins that came with previous versions of MEP Premium and VPX6 and X7, but it appeared that I had not uninstalled them, so the question was, would they work without the Magix main program?

Answer, yes! Red Giant Universe - Chromatic Glow, Knoll Light Factory EZ and Retrograde, NewBlue Essentials, Filters, Stylizers and Titler EX, proDAD Heroglyph (still has license problem but works), Adorage (now shows up under Fades and Effects, Mercalli 2 and 4, are all there and seem to work. However, I think that I may have reinstalled NewBlue ActionCam package but not sure (MEP2016), and I did reinstall NewBlue Looks even though they showed up after installing MEP2016.

What did not work was the MP4 Codec. The programs ask me to Activate or pay. There was no such requirement first time round and I have raised a ticket with Magix (I would have expected a reply by now). The Codecs are included in the price of Premium and VPX. I thought that I might have a chance as there is a download for the MP4 Main Concept Codec, but just clicking on the download asks for Activation. This should not happen.

Here is the download screen for the Codec:

The main thing for me was successfully get Speed burnR in English instead of German, but I can't continue with anything until the Codec situation is sorted out.

MusicMaker and Samplitude

This was difficult. Uninstalling killed all of the instruments that I had. Despite what Magix says in their adverts - includes 15 instruments (Live) or 17 instruments (Premium), they never say what they are and really do not include all of the instruments that I had from previous versions. I will raise a ticket about this; Magix should state somewhere what all of these instruments are. I didn't have all of the install files for some of the earlier MusicMaker and Music Studio and Samplitude Music Studio programs and had to download and install them just to get the files for the instruments. Pain. Where I had the instrument file, I only had to run it to install it. But I ended up with a bunch of programs that I did not want to install, and there was one that did not leave me the exe files for the instruments. I looked at the documentation and, where I had kept it, the advert for the old programs, to see which instruments came with which program. I had documented some, but not all. In some cases, the name given by Magix did not match the actual name of the instrument, thus I downloaded some that I did not have to. In any event, I was able to get all of the instruments that I had before, I think, with the exception of Century Keys which takes some manipulation to get it to work (I had it figured out before). Two instruments that I had purchased separately had to be reactivated and I used the reactivation button to get a new code.

The only plus was that MusicMaker 2016 Live (Premium) now works a lot faster in loading instruments using the + button at the left. Where it took 36 seconds for the instrument to load under W7, it now takes only a few seconds. Magix should have figured this out after I raised the ticket about the slowness of loading instruments under W7.

Xara Designer Pro X9 and X11

I decided to reinstall X9, make a quick video again illustrating the interface with MEP and VPX and how to make the animation work properly with the video advancing in Xara and then returning an animation to MEP and VPX. Unfortunately, I had exceeded the number of activations (ticket raised) so I wasn't able to do it (counter reset by Xara but too late to do the video thing). I then installed X11 and had a lot of trouble updating to the latest patch. It crashed a half dozen times. Finally got it to work.
