Trouble with Photostory

craigjhowe wrote on 12/13/2019, 8:28 AM

I was in the middle of a slideshow when I allowed an update. I lost about a days work in the slideshow when this happened, but after I completed the slideshow and burned it, it won't play on my blu-ray player on my TV. I can go onto the burned disk and copy the 00000 file to my computer, burn that and it will play on my TV, but doesn't look very professional. Any ideas why this occured?

Hi

. . . . I completed the slideshow and burned it . . .

Which menu template in the disc menu page did you use?

When you clicked the Burn option in the Disc menu page which option did you select burn a DVD, BluRay or AVCHD disc?

What disc make and type are you burning to?

I have also moved your post to the correct forum.

Your computer specification may also help - see this topic for details required.

I'm not sure what you mean by menu template, but it's probably the default. When I click burn, I get a page up with the title and the first slide in the show displayed, I click on burn again and chose Blu-ray.

I bought two new computers this year with windows 10. I bought the new Magix program so it would work with windows 10. The version I have is 19.0.1.24. I used it with no problems on my desktop, this is the first try with my laptop.

We still need the answers to the questions:

What disc make and type are you burning to?

For the latter give the specification of your laptop.

The latest version is 19.0.2.36 so there is at least one later patch which you ought to download and install.

@craigjhowe

Are you saying the Update you mentioned in your original question was actually an update to Photostory? I rather think that other users may have assumed the same thing as I did, that the update was actually to Windows itself. When you write that this update caused you to lose "about a day's work" of your slideshow, this seems to imply you allowed the update to run without first saving your slideshow project. Is that correct? If so, I have to say I am not at all surprised, sorry! Any update to any program should only ever be allowed to install once all work in that program has been saved.

As to why the update seems to not have given you the latest version, I believe Magix updates are generally "sequential", i.e. they must be installed "in order of release". If you check under Help>Update online you may well see there is another one offered to you.

The Update Service which Magix operates automatically allows the user to update his/her software for 12 months from the original date of purchase; at the conclusion of those 12 months there is an option to "renew" the service for an additional 12 months, and so on.

I also think the BD burning problem is something completely different to the problem caused for you by the update. There is nothing in the spec of your computer which stands out as a potential cause of the unplayable BD but it would be useful to know exactly which i7 processor you have (and its speed) and what is the disc burner (manufacturer, model etc.) you are using and whether it is internal to the computer or external.

Yes, it was a Magix update. Like I said, this was the first slideshow I had worked on with this computer. I worked on it for about 6 hours, saved the work and closed the program. I had about 13.5 minutes done on the show. The next morning, when I opened the program it said there was an update and did I want to do it now. I said yes, after the update there was less than a 1.5 minutes left of my work. Since that time every time I opened the program I have been given the option of upgrading to the new product free for one year, until I told it not to show me again.

I normally save my work about every 2 minutes of new content added. After the update I could only find an auto save the program had made.

I have an Asus external drive blu-ray burner that was manufactured in 2016. I have burned slideshows with this burner, but of course it was an older magix program and an older computer. It is the same model burner though that I use with my new Windows 10 desktop and it works fine.

Once I finished the slideshow and it wouldn't play on my TV, I loaded it back in the burner and looked at what was on it. I found the list of video files burned onto the disk and took the largest, (by far) file named 00000 and copied it back to my computer. Then I burned that to a new Blu-ray disc and it will play, although it treats it like a data disc. I repeated this process for the next slideshow I did, and am now working on my 3rd. I've spent 3 days on it and have at least one more to go. So, I won't be updating anything until it's completed.

The i7 is 8565U@1.80 GHz 1.99 GHz. Model # G2D0AP061193

Does the disc have all these folders 2 or more video files in the Stream folder as shown below

Once you have the project finished on the timeline, what are the main steps you take to burn the disc?

Yes, there were seven or eight video files.

When I'm ready to burn, I either just click the burn tab on the top right, or go into file and click burn. Then I get a screen the has the opening slide, click burn again and get a page where I choose the media. I click Blu-ray, then get another screen where I again click burn. These last 3 pages are small laid over the original.

The fact that the BD player detects the discs as a Data disk and the process you are going through to burn the disk is correct, would suggest the discs are of variable quality - where did you purchase them from?

Have you tried any other BD disks?

I'm using Nero to burn the disc after it transfer the file back to my computer. It's the only way I could figure out how to burn it was as a data disc. If I tell it I want to burn a video it wants me to put in all the information that already didn't work. I just finished my third slideshow, and still have the same issue. I'll try the newer program update and see if that works. I've used these disks for several years and have never had a problem with any. I get them from Amazon and buy them in 50 disc stacks, usually 2 of them at a time.

craigjhowe wrote on 12/15/2019, 6:05 PM

I just did the newest download, reburned one of the slideshows, still will not work on the TV. Only other thing I can think of is to do a new one and see if that works. Still guessing it won't. I used to occasionally burn a show for someone in Europe or most of the rest of the world, and I used to have to change the encoding for them. I thought maybe this new one had somehow been downloaded in the European mode and tried to find that, but I don't see where it is.

johnebaker wrote on 12/16/2019, 5:18 AM

Hi

. . . . I thought maybe this new one had somehow been downloaded in the European mode . . . .

It picked up the settings from the previous version.

Open Program settings, Options tab - top left are the Video standard settings - if yours is set to PAL then this may be the cause of the issue.

I have some BD-RE discs for doing initial burns with, then if the movie needs changing it can erase re-use - saves making coasters.

Once the project is right I use Nero to copy.

Just a thought, as this is from a laptop, not desktop as you usually uses - could the burning be disrupted due to lack of power to the BD writer?
I have looked at various external BD writers and typically they flag that they might not be used with Laptops due to power requirements. So do you have your laptop on power supply while burning, or is it running on battery?

Have you tried burning the slideshow to BD image file (rather than direct to BD disk) and then use this image in Nero burner?
An image is a file holding all the files on the BD in a format that represents the BD as a disk. When loading the BD image file in Nero you should see the content of the image in the burner, not the file itself. Kind of seeing the content of a Zip file rather than seeing the zip-file itself.

Well that's not the problem either, it's set on NTSC.

Both the computer and burner are plugged into an uninteruptable power source.

Haven't tried the image route, mainly because it shouldn't be necessary.

emmrecs wrote on 12/16/2019, 8:57 AM

@craigjhowe

Haven't tried the image route, mainly because it shouldn't be necessary.

Perhaps not but it is quite possible to verify that a disc image actually "works properly" before any attempt is made to burn it to disc. i.e. you do not need to actually burn the disc until you are sure the "image" actually performs as you wish it to do. I regularly use this procedure (create image, verify playback, burn disc) to create DVDs and, less often BDs. You just need to ensure you have software which can "mount" (= play) an .iso (disc image) file.
