If they are also commercial DVDs then that could be the DRM doing that, there are several DRM techniques available to commercial manufacturers.

There is also the legal aspect to take into account - the ripping of copy-protected content whether you own the disc or not is not legal.

As an example I have been trying to transfer tv commercials from 25 year old tv shows. It's still showing just the blue screen but sound is working fine no matter what I try to play. Is it supposed to pick on signal from a dvd when using a scart cable like I do when playing things from a VCR is am I meant to connect in a different way to play content from a DVD player?

Where does that leave leave file convertors like Handbrake? I ask because in most countries you are allowed to make backup copies for personal use, including the UK.

While I am heavily against any form of piracy or making financial gain from other peoples work (I was in the industry for heavens sake) there are exceptions for valid educational purposes and preservation of historical documentation as well as for personal use providing they ‘lawfully acquired the material on a permanent basis’. Look up the UK laws regarding this.

Are we to judge end user use?

Hi Stephan.

Not being a user of this particular program or its associated hardware I can't help in that respect. I only know if there is any form of DRM in the discs you will not get a picture.

Maybe John can help with checking the connections but if they are correct then the software is not capable as it would seem the discs would be DRM protected and the reason you cannot get any images from the discs.

Do bear in mind the legal aspects of doing this. It is not legal if you do not permanently own the discs you copy from and have obtained them from the copyright holder meaning the current rights holder. (I am referring to the non commercial discs)

If you have to return the discs you have no legal right to the copies as an individual. The adverts themselves would belong to the companies the products represent. If the companies no longer exist it is possible someone else bought the rights to the material. I know this because in the past I helped make the jingles for such adverts and have my own legal collection of music tracks by various jingle artists for quite a few well known brands that turned down particular compositions of work, including most of Ronnie Bonds' work. (If you are into adverts you may recognise the name or may not as he was English and worked from the UK.) He is not the person you find looking up Wikipedia. There were two Ronnie Bonds.
