Surface Pro 6 and Video Deluxe

Fedex03 wrote on 7/30/2019, 4:02 AM

Hi there,

I'm using Magix Video Deluxe to edit video taken with my drone.

Usually I edit video in PAL FullHD 24 fps with a notebook that has a dedicated nVidia video card.

NoI bought a new Surface Pro 6 with Intel i5 and 8 Gb of RAM.

When I edit my video, the preview windows sometimes is very slow and the transition effects are not show.

Is there some setting to speed up the preview window? Something related to the resolution of the preview windos.

Thanks for the help!

Best regards,

Federico

@Fedex03

I think we need a user who has a Surface Pro, 6 or earlier, to comment on this. I know @browj2 has one; I've tagged him in this reply so hopefully he will be able to potentially help you.

Hi,

I'm far from being an expert on hardware.

Which version of Movie Edit Pro (VDL) are you using? I have Premium, 18.0.3.261.

I have the SP4 with the i5 chip and 8GB and playback is usually not very smooth in MEP, especially with transitions and effects added. Even rendering all or part of the timeline does not always play back smoothly.

Magix has changed the engine in Video Pro X11 and it works much, much better. A rendered transition now plays back smoothly. We will see if Magix changes the engine of MEP with the next version.

Next, you would be much better off with the i7 chip and 16GB, but I guess that it's too late (and expensive) for that.

You can try using proxy files, pre-rendering, or turning on the Preview rendering button (lightning bolt). Right-click on the lightning bolt to determine what you can live with - reduced resolution, no effect, slower speed.

Make sure that you have a fast mini SD card in the SP and put your source files there to reduce the load on the main drive.

That is about all that I can suggest.

Hi John,

thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately the Surface Pro 6 with i7 processor was too expensive 😬

I'm using the Video deluxe Premium (bought in 2017, this evening I'll check the version).

Usually my video files are on an extern usb 3 hard disk. I also tried to copy the file inside the microSD but nothing has changed.

What do you intend with proxy files?

I'll try the other settings suggested.

Regarding Video Pro X11, do you think that it is better? I could try the free trial. Compared to Video Deluxe, Video Pro X11 is much more expensive.

With Video Pro X11, you can work easily on your Surface Pro?

Thanks for your time!

Best regards,

Federico

Hi Federico,

I also use an external USB drive. John EB has a method to be able to use the external drive with the same mapping on both of his computers, thus no reason to move files from one computer to the other, just plug and go. The MEP project correctly finds the files.

You can turn on "Automatically create proxy files" under Project Settings. Search for Proxy in the Help file to see all that it does. Here is part of what the manual says, "If performance deteriorates and playback becomes shaky due to hardware limitations, hi-res source material or very complex projects, it is recommended to use proxy files for editing. Lower resolution copies of the original file in a format that is better for playback are created and used for the editing process. The original files in a higher resolution are then used for the export process by default." This is for the Premium version only, apparently (I would have thought that it would also be in the Plus version).

I suggest that you first try the proxy solution and rendering sections before previewing. Wait until the next version of MEP to see if Magix has changed the engine.

You can try VPX11, but I find that using it on the Surface Pro is not optimal with only one small screen. I use 2 large screens with my desktop. VPX11 has 2 more windows than MEP which you can turn off and on at will. Unless you need or like some of the features that VPX11 has over MEP, then it would be best to stick with MEP. Personally, I like and use the other 2 windows and a few other VPX11 only features, but I can do almost everything with MEP Premium.

The surface pro as far as hardware specs on the i5 just isn't the best machine suited for the job. It's good to start and run in a jam, but you'll really appreciate something with a bit more ooph such as a desktop with a dedicated graphics card. As stated above, using an external drive with the project on it may work wonders... Rough cuts on the tablet, real editing on the desktop when you get back to the office. Can you use it to edit? Absolutely. Will you hate it? I would say you will. You can even render on it if you have that kind of time...

As a long time Microsoft "user" I feel for you when they advertise their hardware as being the greatest and newest thing - it is generally neither.

I do my rough cuts in the field with a (do laugh) Latitude D630, 4GB ram, T9300 processor & a little SSD. When I get home I run against an 8 core processor, 32gb ram, 3x 1070 8GB video cards, a RAID 5 array. This is overkill for the youtube content I create and this machine can do 4k editing with ease. I transfer with a robo copy job that dumps it into the raid from the laptop. Single point of failure is the laptop unless the media on the cameras die first. I have only lost footage once, due to user error, my error.

@browj2 thank you very much for your help!

With the proxy I have a perfect preview witout any lag.

I also edit my videos using an external monitor (24 inch) connected to the Surface 6 Pro docking station.

I think that for the moment I stick to Magix Video Deluxe. Maybe I'll upgrade it to the latest version.

Where I can see in the video engine has changed with the new release of Magix Video Deluxe?

Thank you again for your time.

Best regards,

Federico

Hi Federico,

It's great to hear that proxies work fine for you.

We will have to wait for the next version to see if MEP gets the Infusion Engine. I expect that it will be released in the coming weeks. When it is released, wait until the forum users do some testing before upgrading.
