Here is the other XAVC file in 10 bit. This is much less compressed.

I tried to upload it twuco to Google Drive but it failed for some reason. So this is from the One Drive Microsoft cloud :

Hi.

You need to buy the additional Intra Codec for VPX 14 for your second file. You should have got this pop-up box telling you that. As far as codecs go I think that one is quite expensive and will only work within Magix programs.

Is it the file downloaded from One DRIVE that needs the additional codec?

The one that play without additional codecs, is the one you got from GOOGLE DRIVE?

Gus_2030 wrote on 6/6/2023, 7:23 PM

If so I am ready to buy Magix Video Pro X 14. I need to shoot and edit this asap.

Hi Ray

. . . . . Pulse Code Modulation. L is for multichannel. . . . .

Not quite - the L is for Linear, referring to the Quantization method, for more info on the difference see here.

For iPCM, I can find little explanation of the exactly what this means, however there is confusion over what the "i" stands for - so far I have found 2 references - 'intra' and 'independent' for intra the reference is a Google patent which is not very forthcoming in what the difference is.

@Gus_2030

Hi

If the Sony A75 camera is anything to go by, it looks like the selection of the audio format is available when using the XLR Handle Unit.

Have you recordiing in the different XAVC formats to see if one can be imported with audio?

. . . . how could I get that codec that will let VPX play the audio from that file? . . . .

I would have expected the Sony software Catalyst Prepare to install the necessary codec and/or be able comvert the audio to LPCM or AAC, though it can play back your sample file with audio, it has limited option regarding the export/conversion.

The XLR handle only gives you the option to select 4 channels or 2 channels. Or 24 bit or 16 bit. Do you think changing to 16 bit will change to AAC? Just a thought.

@Gus_2030 it does say in Sony FX3 Specs  MPEG-4 AAC-LC 2ch

johnebaker wrote on 6/6/2023, 7:58 PM

@Gus_2030

I suspect the audio issue is with the 24 bit level rather than the codec - try recording 2 channel 16 bit and import this into VPX.

Yes, however, how to set it. Unless as John suspect this AAC format will be the format when set to 16 bit.

@Gus_2030  I just looked through the website, lots of info but always a bit vague, you can just keep trying different ones,

That information I post is an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo, After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, , this app will give you a bit more info to compare each trial. 👍

John, you were correct. I switched to 2 ch. 16 bit and that solved the issue with the muted audio. Now I got audio and video playing like a champ! I think when switching to 16 bit, it goes to AAC-LC audio format.

I wonder how much of a quality drop in audio would be to go from 24 bit to 16 bit. I guess not much specially if it is just dialogue.

I will also try installing Catalyst Prepare, something I have not done yet.

Thank you and Gid and everyone who help sorted this out.

Hi

I too am pleased you are now sorted.

. . . . I wonder how much of a quality drop in audio would be to go from 24 bit to 16 bit. . . .

In reality - you would not notice any difference - to tell any difference you would need expensive audio analysis equipment/tools to tell you what the 'quality' difference is.

Unless you are front of stage recording a rock concert I doubt the additional head room difference would be noticed. You are more likely to suffer distortion if the auto level of your camera is not that good and either 'pumps' the audio at various levels as sound levels rise and fall or does not contain sharp transients quickly enough when on auto gain.
