Slow audio playback?

After importing a video file that is in .avi format, if I play it in the program's preview window or export it to a file, the sound plays back in slow motion and a clicking sound is heard. If the imported file is in mpeg format, then everything is fine. What's causing this?

What's the audio codec in those AVI files you're importing? Where are they from? Can you possibly upload and share a sample file here, so I can check this and see what might be the problem? Thanks.
