I do use the Shuttle in conjunction with the mouse and keyboard.

The Shuttle is under my left hand, keyboard directly in front of me and mouse on the right, left or right hand are used for keyboard shortcuts depending on whether the shuttle or mouse is the dominant tool at the time of editing.

I have customised some of the keyboard shortcuts as well, swapping the following

• Mouse mode shortcuts for single track and all tracks to 7, 8 - default is 8, 7 (???).
   
• Trimmer single object and Trimmer editor shortcuts - I mainly use the single object trimmer., so it is now N instead of Shift + N
   
• Master effects and Export to device to H and Shift + Ctrl + H respectively.

As far as placing the the cursor/play marker at the desired point to start playing yes, you have to drag to place the Play marker. But, and this is what I like, the mouse pointer can be anywhere on the interface and you can scroll through the video with the mouse wheel, and you can set the frame jump amount to the Shift and CTRL keys.

@AAProds  Thanks, I used/have used MMS for many yrs but for quite a while now I've mainly used Vegas, there I can place the cursor wherever I want by clicking anywhere on the timeline & scrolling zooms out & back in so jumping ahead or backwards is easy, similar to Ctrl+mouse wheel in MMS but no need for the additional keyboard button. (You can scroll along or up & down the tracks also using the keyboard Shift or Ctrl in conjunction with the mouse wheel like you can with Alt in MMS), When I come back to MMS scrolling with the mouse wheel shoots along the timeline & placing the cursor always catches me out, I click on the timeline window & nothing, then remember I have to click on the timeline header, so I was just curious if somehow you'd got over this somehow.

Not sure what you mean about the "combined with..."

There is the jog wheel at the left and the scroll slider at the right that goes from 0 to 12 times.

For the Shuttle Pro, the ring is programmed mostly as left/right arrow with the start at 5 times per second and increasing as the wheel is furthered turned, with Home/End as the last part with the wheel fully left or right.

I have 5 banks for VPX with different variation - basic, import, effects, audio, keyframes and can switch between the banks using one of the buttons programmed for this.

Here is the basic settings bank:

The inner wheel is 1 frame per click.

Hmmm. I just noticed that my settings are not the same from one bank to another. I'll have to take a look.

On my YT tutorials site, there is a tutorial for Vegas where I show how to set up different banks.

So, I keep the left hand on the Shuttle Pro, right hand on the mouse, but occasionally have to use the keyboard. I have some redundant buttons but the objective is to not have to use the keyboard too often and not have to open and select something from a dropdown menu.

I have Shuttle settings for various programs and keep the cheat sheets nearby. The Shuttle Pro comes with many programs already programmed in. You can have buttons with keystrokes or macros.

You: Not sure what you mean about the "combined with..."

Sorry, not the best description on my part. What I meant was, the only way you can use the mouse wheel to change the Play marker position is to place the pointer right on the jog wheel, which is pretty small. Then, I meant that you only get one setting for frame mouse-wheel jumping: 1 frame at a time.

What I'd like is the jog wheel functionality on the whole of the monitor, so you don't need to be so accurate with the mouse pointer. Also, to be able to hold down the Shift key to jump 5 frames backwards and forwards, not one.

I find the slider good for reviewing but once again, it's very small and also fiddly if you only want to go a few seconds along without zooming incessantly.

No, however in some instances you may have to set the focus to the timeline.

A pane gets 'focus' by clicking anywhere in the that pane section of the program interface, as shown below. In this example, the Media pane is given focus by clicking an object in it followed moving around with arrow keys, then timeline is given focus and moving the timeline cursor using arrow keys.

Using the Contour Shuttle when, for example, an item is selected in the Media pane, ie it has focus, as shown above, the timeline can be played and the cursor positioned using the controls I showed in my previous without selecting it either the timeline or cursor.

@johnebaker Ok thanks for explaining 'focus' & I understood the scrolling with your mouse in the video but you still haven't answered my question, never mind, it doesn't really matter.

I thought the video clip of the Shuttle in action as I have it set and the meaning of focus had answered your question, focus does not move the cursor.

Going back to one of your previous comments which I missed:

Very true, the speed at which is scrolls is controlled by the zoom level you are viewing the timeline at.

While checking the above I have also found that with my Logitech mice, clicking the scroll wheel is another option of play/stop - does your scroll wheel do this?

@johnebaker Hi & no, my one & only question before 'focus' or scrolling was mentioned is 'do you have to click the top of the timeline to place & move the cursor,' I thought I'd made that clear in my video. I didn't inc moving in the video & by that I meant grabbing it & dragging it.

I know about scrolling, I understood both your video, I now understand what you meant when you said 'focus'. My comment 'mouse wheel shoots along the timeline' was just a random comment about how that catches me out when coming back from Vegas, I'm really not interested in scrolling, I never do that in MMS or Vegas, if I want to do something like that I drag the timeline cursor along by grabbing it with the mouse which brings me back to my initial question.

If you want to position the timeline cursor (without scrolling) can you click anywhere in the 'focused' timeline window or do you have to click the very top of the timeline to position it &/or to grab it & drag it?

Yes Play/Stop but not Play/Pause like the Spacebar or controls below the preview window do,

It doesn't .actually, and that's my point. Scrolling (Play Marker moving along the timeline; perhaps I mean scrubbing?), which can only be achieved on the jog bar, is at 1 frame per click on the wheel. I find that's too slow. I want to speed it up, much like JohnCB's observation of the left and right arrows with CTRL held down. Arrow keys: Play marker moves one frame. CTRL+Arrow= 5 frame scroll.

@AAProds @johnebaker It was a very simple question about positioning & grabbing the timeline cursor that only needed a yes or no answer, I really don't care anymore, it really doesn't matter esp if as quite often comments aren't read properly.

@AAProds & just to show you Yes it does, I guess it depends on your viewpoint, like I said it was just a random comment & really doesn't matter.

Yes, you either have to grab the cursor (the triangle part just above the timeline) and drag to move the cursor, or simply click in the same area and the cursor will move there.

The other ways all scroll/scrub along timeline.

Hi Al,

Here is a new one that I didn't know about - move section. In the timeline area, hold down Ctrl+Alt and drag, using the left mouse button, left (unless already at the beginning), right, up or down. This is similar to moving the area/section displayed on the timeline using the horizontal and vertical scroll bars, but going along the timeline goes past the end of the horiz scroll bar. Up moves the vertical scroll bar down. Or something like that.

Considering the responses above, perhaps "scrolling" is not the correct term. Should I be call it "scrubbing"?

Just to reiterate, I'm talking about moving the Play Marker along the timeline, not moving the timeline itself, or zooming in and out on it.

By definition Scrubbing is the correct term to use.

However this is complicated by 'misuse' of Scrubbing to specifically mean Scrolling the timeline and hearing the audio at the same time - here is a good example.

Added: The definition of Scrubbing in Help may clarify this double use.
