Save objects as takes

Periplex wrote on 1/14/2012, 10:18 PM

Movie Edit Pro MX Plus (download version)

This is obviously a very powerful piece of software, but I'm finding it extremely frustrating trying to get guidance on certain features with which I am not familiar. For example...

What are "takes" all about? The only reference I can find in the PDF manual says:

"The selected objects are saved in the takes directory. To use takes, please read the chapter "Saving objects separately" in the PDF manual."

What PDF manual? That quote is from the 398 page PDF manual. Is there another manual I don't know about?

Anyway...

After selecting an object on the timeline and doing an "Edit --> Save objects as takes", clicking on "Import --> My media --> Takes" shows nothing there.

So I dug around and found the "takes" directory at: D:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\MAGIX\Movie_Edit_Pro_MX_Plus_Download_Version\Takes

But it's empty too, no objects are being saved there.

I'm not even sure that "takes" is the feature I'm looking for. What I wanted to do was save some intro stuff (there's more than one object involved) from the current project, and have that available for pasting into a related project, so they both have the same types of beginnings.

Any enlightenment most welcome.

Hi,

First, you're not alone in being frustrated by poor Magix documentation. The PDF manual is poorly organised and has many errors, some due to translation flaws, others to plain sloppy editing. I used to report specific details but gave up as they were rarely corrected.

That's an odd sort of problem, which I can't reproduce. My Takes folder is at

C:\Docs\MAGIX\Movie_Edit_Pro_MX_Premium_Download_Version\Takes

and gets a new entry whenever I use the tool.

Are they somehow getting saved elsewhere? Search for .TAK files.

And/or try File > Settings > Reset program settings to default ...

I think your requirement is an appropriate use of Takes.

Hi

The Takes folder is easy to find:

Right click the Takes item in the media pool pane, select Properties.  In the middle of the dialog box is the location where the Takes folder is.

Thanks for the responses guys.

As to the actual location of the "takes" folder according to Properties, it is indeed the path I gave earlier: D:\Documents and Settings\my name\My Documents\MAGIX\Movie_Edit_Pro_MX_Plus_Download_Version\Takes

But now I know why there's nothing showing up in there.

I'm saving my projects to a large terabyte drive with the system designator H: and I have discovered that, when "Save objects as takes" is used, a "takes" folder is created in the relevant project folder on H:, so for every project I end up with the folders:

H:\...\Project Name
H:\...\Project Name\Audio Temp
H:\...\Project Name\My Book
H:\...\Project Name\Takes

BTW, "My Book" is the system name of the H: drive. It exists for every project, but never contains any files. Odd.

Anyway, I haven't been able to find any way to change "Takes" to what it should be so that *.TAK files will show up under the "Takes" selection in the media pool. Maybe "File --> Settings --> Reset program settings to default" might do it, but I'm reluctant to take that step until I'm finished the projects I'm working on, because at the moment I do at least know where everything is, even if it's not 100% convenient.

Unfortunately it seems that there are a number of the object types that can't be saved as "takes", so this feature isn't helping me with what I wanted to do.

Thanks to you both for helping to sort this out. I see you've both been around here for quite a while, so I have a number of other questions, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of places one can get informed help with MEP MX Pro.

I hope you won't get tired of hearing from me :-(

Hi,

I dont see an obvious answer to your first question, "What are takes anyway?"  I know this is pretty basic and may look like an insult but it is not ment to be.  A movie is made up of a series of shots or sciens that tell the story.  I have been editing 8MM film that was shot by my parents in the 1950's.  I had to get the film transferred to digital files and cut the file into "takes" so that I could rrange them the way I want to show them and add fades and transitions between shots. the program saves the individul shots in a folder called "Takes" so that you can re-arrange them in any order you desire. I think the others have described how to set your file system correctly.

My Objects are not saving the correct length when added to the project folder. The next time I try to use the object I have to stretch, stretch, stretch it back to its original Any suggestions?

@sams_e

Hi.

Personally I'm not a project folder user in the normal sense of the program but I would have thought that depending on how the project is set up that the project folder just shows where the individual video clips are stored and as such are not objects in themselves as the videos themselves could be spread across a number of drives. I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will correct that assumption if I am. If I wished to place another identical object to the timeline somewhere else I would simply copy and paste the object to its new needed location.

Hi

Please do not resurrect old topics, this one is 12 yrs old, and relates to an older version of the program which is very different to current versions.

We need more information to help diagnose the issue(s) you are having:

What will not work, please be specific rather than a generalised comment eg:

  • From where are you adding the video clips ?

  • Do the clips have a range set either in the Preview monitor or on the timeline if adding them form there?

If you are saving the clips, as Takes, into the project folder, there is a known bug - see this topic for more information.

It would also help if you put the specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop, n your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are you getting any error messages, if so then please quote them in full or provide screen shots.

Hi,

@sams_e is referring to the Project Folder, thus VPX, so not even the same program as this thread. This has already been raised as a bug.

@sams_e - create a new thread with the name and versions of the program and under the correct heading. Describe the problem in more detail, and I will reply.

What I really want is a good thread by @sams_e and then get him to raise a ticket. This bug has been there for far too long.
