S-video cable, no picture

sholmes75 wrote on 1/11/2021, 11:33 AM

I've just bought a SCART to S-Video & phono cable to use my also just purchased latest version of 'Rescue your videotapes' to avoid using the Composite cable that comes with it.

It's a Bandridge BVL6302.

Choosing S-Video from the import window I'm getting no picture from my VCR at all using any tapes - commercial or home recorded.

Using the Composite cable and choosing Composite in the import screen it works straight away.

The seller says you can't use the Bandridge cable with the MAGIX hardware/software, but I struggle to understand why not. It's a simple enough connection.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi

. . . .  Bandridge BVL6302 . . . .

Did you set the switch on the SCART plug to Out ie to the right when looking at from the cable?

My cable doesn't have in and out on it (it has COMP and S-Video) and the arrows on the SCART connector point in what looks to be the 'wrong' direction. I asked the seller whether the cable was wrong in the box, but he said not. It doesn't matter which way around the switch goes, the preview window on RYV doesn't show any picture at all.

Hi

Assuming you have tested both SCART sockets on the VCR if it has 2 and neither give a video output.

. . . . cable doesn't have in and out on it (it has COMP and S-Video) and the arrows on the SCART connector point in what looks to be the 'wrong' direction . . . .

That is confusing - the way the arrows are pointing in your image would suggest the SCART end is what goes into the TV and the 2 phono and S-video connector to the VCR out - in which case the cable is, an 'IN' cable at the SCART end ie it only the IN signal pins connected in the plug - this would explain why you are getting no video.

It would also be unusual to have an S-video input on a TV.

Thanks for the replies, John.

I plugged this in the other way around - old console S-Video to SCART and got a picture. Should this be possible if this cable is supposed to be SCART to S-Video?

I'm no expert at all, but I can't help but think this cable wasn't right in the box from the off.

Hi

. . . . old console S-Video to SCART and got a picture . . . .

That confirms what I was describing ie it is an IN cable which is not the one you need.

The signals are going from the three connectors to the IN pins in the SCART plug - a SCART plug has dedicated pins assigned for signal in and signal out only the IN ones are connected in the cable. If the cable had an In/Out switch the appropriate pins would be connected to the cable depending on the switch position.

Looking at the packaging, it clearly states DVD VCR SAT -> Plasma LCD TV.

The cable is what the box states it is, as I commented above TV's with S-video inputs are rare - they are nearly always SCART and some have composite phono (yellow/red/white) inputs as well.

I hope this clarifies what I said previously.

That sort of makes sense.

The pictures of this cable on the eBay auction and others of it online show it with in/out arrows next to the switch, that's why I bought it. I'm disappointed that the cable isn't like this in reality. Good job it wasn't greatly expensive.

Thanks again, John.
