RGB Curves

faisal_ahmed786 wrote on 3/3/2015, 3:16 PM

Hi,

I have been watching tutorials online for how to get the film look. One of the main points that keeps comming up is to edit the RGB curves, i.e. make the darks darker and lights lighter. Most tutorials I view refer to other packages such as After Effects, for which there are three lines that can be edited. I was wondering if the same thing existed in video pro x6? I know you can do 3-way colour correction but can you edit RGB curves with the package? Or is it through plugins?

Hi,

Do you have VPX6?

X6 has measuring instruments to help to see what is happening when colour is changed.

Below is a screen shot showing the Vectorscope at the left and the Color correction tools at the right.

There are also tools under Brightness/Contrast to brighten/darken selected areas, like Gamma, Lows, Mid, and Highs, plus HRD gamma tool. See below.

You would need to refer to the manual to see how to use these, and how to interpret what happens in the instruments when you modify parameters.

Somewhere along the way we got Magix Bullet Quick Looks which has a lot of presets that can save a lot of time having to play around with colours, etc. to get a particular look. Do you have this?

I also have Pixelan FilmTouch 2 Pro which has a lot of presets that can be fully modified within the tool. You might want to take a look at it. You can download the trial. It is a full version but leaves an X across the screen when used as trial.

With VPX6 plus the tools indicated above, I feel that I have much more than I will ever need. No need to look elsewhere.

@Faisal,

Take a look at the plugin that Walter sent below. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks very interesting.

@Walter,

Good one! Thanks for the links. Good tutorial! The tool has some very interesting possibilities.

For All,

I took another look at Pixelan FilmTouch 2.0 Pro. Here are some screen shots:

Preset looks - only 1 is open on the screen, but there are hundreds:

Below: Working area with tools at the right. Screen is split diagonally with original at the left. At the right you can see some of the tools. I did not use a preset look here, just played around with some of the parameters.

Below: Same but scrolled down to show the other parameters at the right. This time I used some of the presets and a round vignette for effect. Now that I have taken a look, I find this extremely interesting and powerful. Note that almost all of the parameters can be key-framed.

A preset look can be fully modified and key-framed.

Hi

. . . . Take a look at the plugin that Walter sent below. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks very interesting. . . .

For information:

I have been using this excellent plugin in MEP 2013 and 2013, however it is 32 bit and does not work with MEP 2015.

Note - look at the tutorials for the various processing options - ie RGB , RGB + R/G/B etc

Hi BrowJ. Just a quick quesiton. How do I bring up those displays when in colour correction mode in your screenshot below?

browj2 wrote on 3/4/2015, 6:36 PM

@John EB,

I was wondering about that (32 bit), but it looks like Walter was using it in VPX6 with the monitoring instruments open.

So Walter, how did you do it?

@Faisal,

The screens that I showed are using the Pixelan FilmTouch 2.0 Pro plugin. You have to buy it from Pixelan.

You can download the trial version from their site and try it out.
