problems editing scenes

Can anyone help with trimming scenes. In Timeline mode I follow the instructions to trim or delete unwanted scenes, end with a gap in the video and, as the "help" section says, just drag the remaining scenes together.  The result is dragging the "cut" scenes back into the timeline. In Storyboard mode I often end up with a fade called a "thru black" which basically means I have a blank screen where I thought I had cut out unwanted material - and I cannot undo this "thru black" fade.  In the drop down list of fades, "thru black" is ticked, will not untick and I cannot find any reference to it anywhere. Why won't my editing scenes disappear? How can I successfully unite the video together where the scenes have been cut? I have worked on this for several days now and cannot sort it out. Can anyone help please?
Thanks.

When you drag the scene to the left to fill the gap, your cursor is a double arrow. Then you drag the "cut" scene back. But move the cursor a little more to the right, and the cursor changes to a hand. With this hand you can drag and fill the gap! You should be in "Intelligent mouse mode" (Alt+2) to have all the other scenes to the right to follow the dragging.   --  Another way is to mark the scene and click the A/B-mark in the left side of the scene. You get a drop down window, a survey over all accessible transitions. Click on top, "Cut", and the gap is filled.
Under the monitor is a small scissors symbol, click the small triangle and learn to use the letters T, K and U. (I refer to MEP 14)
