PhotoStory Not So Easy

davidhewett wrote on 9/6/2013, 10:41 AM

Had a client that had a lot of sequenced pictured of window and door replacements - hey he says" can you make a slideshow? bit of music ?"

EASY I thought - Presenting photos has never been easier. We are Told!
Photostory easy allows you to transform your photos from digital cameras and smartphones into amazing movies for mobile devices, TV and the Internet, even if you are a complete beginner! Includes an automatic image optimization feature, effect design and audio dubbing.

A week later + I AM Miserable +

Been Using Xara products for the best part of 30 years without drama - So I kind of think go with a firm you trust

Photo Story "EASY" should be easy But system crashes Freezes - corrupted files - Lost Files -

I EXPECT a learning Curve - but hells bells

On export your informed MAGIX want More Money - I think we needed to be told in advance folks - even if it is licencing for a Codec - (Thats Gibberish to most people)

So I create a show - Upload it to Magix Online - dammit on my site 16-9 squashed to 4x3 What a dreadful waste of time

So I remake all my slides and woooh - All my pictures are doubled up with an added filename.001.jpg - Ever seen a grown man cry?

Do a Save as make a new file -
Wherever those went I may NEVER find out - Im clearly missing something here -

Remake the Slideshow this time in 4x3 - all looking fine - and its only taken me 4 days to do a 5 min slide show - "EASY" !!!! Not

Press button Upload to Magix - FREEZE - Access Violation - Pulls remaining hair out! - The MAGIX forum appears to leave many users in the same boat hanging - Unless you buy yet more Support Vouchers?

OK Rant over

Hi David,

I presume that you bought and used PhotoStory on DVD and not Video Easy.

I am surprised by your problems. I tried out the program today, second time since June, created a couple of quick slide shows, added some music without using the wizard (also did one using the wizard), added a variety of transitions between some of the slides, exported to Share on your online Album, As Video, with the highest resolution, and created a new album for it in my online Album, and it worked very well. The result in my album in full screen mode was HD 16:9.

As for where the files go, when you do a Save As, the Windows Explorer screen comes up. Look at the top line or in the folders at the left to see where the program is proposing to put the project file. By default, it is probably:

C:\Users\your name\Documents\MAGIX\PhotoStory on DVD 2013 Deluxe

In Windows Explorer, look in My Documents under Magix Project\PhotoStory on DVD 2013 Deluxe and you will see other folders such as My Slideshows and My Record. You can decide whether or not to leave the project files in the root or place them somewhere else. Look in the menu - File, Setup, Program and under the tab Paths you will get a screen with the locations of the files and some connected programs. You can change the location of the Projects here if you wish. Here is the screen:

You may want to look at the other Program settings to make sure that the program correctly detected the settings on your computer. You can change some of the preferences, like the Standard picture length.

When you are using the program, note the 3 modes at the very left of the bottom pane - Overview, Storyboard, Timeline. Learn how to use them. Read the manual. The program is actually quite powerful, even if it is a stripped down version of Movie Edit Pro.

Finally, the program does not actually import or modify your base files - photos, music, etc., it only uses them. Thus if you use some files, like photos, save the project, close it, move the photo files, then reopen PhotoStory, it will not be able to find the files, which may explain why you "lost" some files.

I suggest that you try again by making some test files with a dozen or slides and trying out the Wizards, like Slideshow Maker and Soundtrack Maker. Use the Timeline mode to see the tracks and to see where the music goes. Try out the effects, especially transitions, they are quite interesting. If you make an automatic slideshow using the Wizards, you can modify the details in the Timeline mode.

Have fun,

John
